HERE'S WHERE YOUR MONEY GOES—The farmer got an
average of 49 cents of each dollar you spent for farm food prod
ucts in May, this year. The other 51 cents went to pay marketing
agencies (middlemen) in the chain from the farm to your kitchen.
The Newschart above, based on data from the U. S. Department of
Agriculture, shows the farmer’s take and that of the middlemen
for various types of foods. The 49-cent figure for May represents
a decline of two cents—almost four per cent—below the 51 cents of
the food dollar the farmer was getting in April. The reason: farm
prices declined while middleman’s costs and charges ‘went up.

Baseball Probe
Still Continues
WASHINGTON, Aug. 7—(AP)
—Congressional investigators of
baseball turned today to something
of a mystery witness for more in
formation about the game.
Chairman Celler (D-NY) of the
House Judiciary Committee inden
tified the scheduled witness only
by his name—Ross C. Horning.
He declined to tell newsmen
where Horning is from or what his
connection is or has been with
organized baseball. Neither would
he indicate what tack his testi
mony might take.
Veteran sports writers on the
scene were at a loss to place him.
But the memory of yesterday’s
testimony by A. B. (Happy) Chan
dler, the recently unseated high
commissioner, lingered on.
Rep. Herlong (D-FLA.), one of
the backers of legislation to ex
empt baseball frem anti-trast
laws, told a reporter he thought
Chandler “made a pretty good wit
ness for baseball.” .
“lI wish he had come out flat
footed on the need for legislation
for the game.” He said. “I know
that he thinks it is necessary also.”
Herlong, former President of the
Florida State League, will testi
fy on Friday along with other
sponsors of similar billls—Reps.
Mills (D-ARK.), Price (D.ILL.)
and Senator Edwin C. Johnson
(D-COLO.) who is also president
of the Western League.
Chandler side-stepped endorsing
any particular alteration of the
laws for baseball’s benefit.
But in shouting - from - the
housetop manner, he said “the in
tegrity of baseball must be pre
served.”
He also took a few pot-shots at
“some” Major League club owners,
saying the game would be better
off if they got into some other
field, he didn’t identify them.
Aware that baseball’s high mo
guls meet today to name his suc
cessor, he suggested they also
make these changes in the rules:
(1) Give the Commissioner
complete authority; (2) elect him
on the basis of a simple majority
vote instead of requiring 12 of the
16 votes; and (3) let the Commiss
joner have the right to fire .the
Secretary-Treasurer of baseball as
well as hire him.

ANTI-BIOTIC BENEFITS .. ....
Recent gains in feeding live
stock and poultry by added to
their feed small quantities of anti
biotic drugs and synthetic vita
mins have been striking. Phenothi
azine is a case in point, says the
U. S. Department of Agriculture.
It does not stimulate growth but
it does prevent the stunting effect
of parasite activities.
