in the accompanying article,

AMVETS
(Written for NEA Service)
WASHINGTON — (NEA) — I
have just returned from a world
¢i cling trip in which I had the un
usual experience of witnessing
man’s eternal struggle for peac:
carried on amid man’s historic
battlefield clash of ideas.
In Rome, 1 saw the efforts tow
~rd peace being made by repres
~tatives of the men who fight
v ars—the veterans. Called by the
ht-month-old World Federa
tion of War Veterans Organiza
{ ons, there were more than 200
¢-legates and observers from 13
countries outside the Iron Curtain.
I went there after a tour of active
cuty with the U. S. Navy in Korea
where I saw another type of strug
glo for pezace.
In the short time since it was
founded, the Federation has
grown from 16 organizations in
e'sht eountries representing 11
million veterans to 17 organizas
tions in 10 countires with a coms
bined membership of 36 million
veterans.
After failing in repeated at
tempts to have the veterans ol
Russia and her satellites join in
a program for a real peace, the
Federation branded Soviet Rus
sia the real aggressor in Korea;
rapped the Soviet for its non
cooperation in atomic control; re
buked countries behind the Iron
Curtain for withholding from
their people the truth on inter
national affairs, and set up a se«
curity eommission within the Fed
eration to travel around the world
in an effort to link veterans in a
continuing fight for world peace
and tol stady the causes of ten
sion in jeach country.
™3 ¢ & =
The Fedreation was recentlv
eredited by the United Nations
and will"be permitted to have an
observer at all sessions of that
world body.
The delegates were motivated
and inspirred by the goal of mold=-
ing all of the veterans of the world
into one powerful organization,
dedicated to the solitary purpose.
of finding a real peace, and to ex
pose the phony peace projosals
of Communist Russia.
Albert Morel of Paris, France.
president of the Federation, un
fortunately Was ill and the driv
ing spirit of a serious-minded
American, a Navy flier in World
War TI, has done much to estabe
lish the prestige of the Federation
and lend it force. He is Elliott H.
Newcomb, secretary general, with
headquarters in Paris. He is the
Former national executive drec
tor of AMVETS.
He hag led successful battles
acainst efforts of pro-Communist
minorities to soften the resolu
tions condenning Russia, and he
has worked to overcome a Eu
ropean type apathy called “neu
tralism.® This, I found, is de
scribed as a middle of the road
political idealism which mistrusts
communism and is suspicious of
American interests in European
atiairs,
The American delegation to
Rome was composed of represen
tatives of four organizations—the
AMVETS, the Disabled American
Vtierans, the American Veterans
Committee, and the Blinded Vet
er-ns Association.
The American Legion and the
Veterans of Foreign Wars, Amer
ica’s two largest-veterans organ
izations, did net send observers
although they had been invited.
Observers attended from the huge
British Legion, howevyer, and in
dications are that the proposal for
membership will be presented to
that organization.
An escape from a Russian con
centration eamp provided a high
lizht at the conference. A Furop
pean, he said he had been cap
tured during the war by Russians
vhile serving with thousands of
Belgians, Frenchmen and Luxem
bourgers who had been forced
into labor battalions or into front
line fighting units by the Ger
tans. He estimated that between
4000 and 15,000 such western Eu
roveans are still held by Russia
slave laborers. 4
When the Federation had fin
ished it business, additionai res
utions high on the list urged:
A United Nations armed force
‘" keep the peace. :
‘reation of regional pacts with
the framework of the United
“ations for the purpose of region
security, similar to the Atlantic
ct
All nations, and particularly
the USSR,” to join in a genuine
effort to reduce the scale of arm=-
aments and threats of aggression,
and to apply the resources thus
liberated to a common program
of economie development.
Establishment through the UN
of a World Development Author
ity to which all member-nations
will contribute “to pool skills and
resources for economic recon
struction free of efforts to securé
political or eeonomic influence.”

LOSES APPEAL
MINNEAPOLIS—(AP) — Only
one American breadwinner in four
really goes for the idea cf retiring
to a life of complete leisure when
he gets up around 65.
Three out of four want to keep
or working, or at least to “do some
thing useful” in their retirement
years, according to a survey of
male policyholders by the North
western Life Insurance Co.
Of 3,000 men covered in the sur
vey, only 24 per cent want a life
of ease when they reach retire
ment age. Most of those who se
lected such a retirement were men
now under 40. Thirty-nine per
cent said they wanted to be fi
nancially able to cut their working
hours and change to 5 lighter oc
cupation after retirement.
