That family “nest egg,” if you're an average family, should be about
S4OOO now, according to the Institute of Life Insurance, which sup
plied the data for the above Newschart. The chart compares aver
age family savings now with those of ten years ago and 30 years
ago. Noteworthy, according to the Institute’s study, is the fact that
accumulated savings have been growing at a far more rapid rate
than consumer spending.

RICE FOR DIABETICS
DURHAM, N. C. —(AP)— Dr.
Walter Kempner of Duke Univers
ity, founder of the famed rice diet
treatment for high blood pressure,
told physicians here that the diet
also helps suffers who have dia
betes. i
Dr. Kempner said he studied 50
patients who had diabetes in com
bination with hypertension and
kidney disease and found that:
“The rice diet is not only well tol
erated by these patients, but in a
significant number of patients it
lowers the blood sugar level and
the insulin requirements.” The
Duke doctor addressed physicians
here, under the auspices of the
American Hospital.
Dr. Kempner began treating
high blood pressure with the rice
diet 10 years ago. Last Spring he
reported that more than 1,200 of
1,800 patients have received
“marked benefit.”
LAYING HENS
If old hens are in the laying
house when young pullets begin
laying, it is wise to move the old
birds out to a temporary shed or
to sell them, Extension Service
poultry ieaders advise.
