"People Are On Their Way Qut
As Movie Sars,” Says Francis
By FRANCIS, THE MULE
(For Erskine Johnson, who is on
vacation)
HOLLYWOOD —(NEA)—Folks,
don't send your talented son
or daughter to Hollywood in the
hope that he or she will crash the
movies. Send your dog. cat or
jackass. Or if you have a skunk,
send that.
Because we animals have taken
over, in the film studios. No longer
do talent scouts peer appraisingly
at pretty faces and shapley limbs,
or listen hopefully to the singing
voices of talented youngsters.
Instead, they’re following the
spoors of wild and domesticated
beasties, tracking down the talent,
as it were. X i
The number, and not the con
tours, of a prospective star’s legs
are what interest the casting direc
tors now. The human biped, being
limited to two, is at a disadvantage.
The girl who has spent her youth
in drama eclasses also is handi
capped. Her ears aren't long
enough.
So unless you have reared a
duck-billed platypus, an aardvark,
a wombat or a garden variety of
domestic quadruved, you haven’t
raised film fodder.
Three years ago, Universal-In
ternational Studio, for example,
was making pictures starring peo
ple. There were no bars on dress
ing rooms and no brooms and
shovels cluttered un the sound
stroes. It was a business by, of
an- for the people.
Then, apnarently, Noah backed
his ark up against a breach in the
stvdio wall and sent a snake in
si'e to inflitrate and make a few
suogestions. No anti-hiss-tamine
being available, the studio bosses
gnve ear.
T'TLE ROLE
NOAH'S first order was for me,
Francis, the talking mule.
Thev even named my first picture
for me. After the producers saw
th~ film, they began to view human
actors with distaste. Hastily they
o-dered another sereenplay for me
and called it “Francis Goes to the
Raeces.” and ordered more animals

own the ark’s gangplank trot
tei a smart chimpanzee named
Poenzo, who made a comedy and
beeame botier known than any
bady in the United States except
Farry Truman and Douglas Mac-
A-thur.
Then Noah simply opened the
end- gate of his -barge, the orders
same so fast, and out of his pre
historic LST screeched, bellowed,
barked and yammered almost
every species of animal known to
the cracker manufacturers. :

of a horse, more than 125 animals
ranging in size from elephants,
rhinos and lions down to squir
rels and mice, were ordered. A
score of dogs and a dozen cats
were included in the order.
The film feautres an animal
heaven called Beaustatory, popu
lated by denizens of the forests
and fields who behaved them
selves while on earth.
When a film called “Fine Day”
went into production co-starring
Academy Award winner Josephine
Hull, Howard Duff and Mona
Freeman, the cast included a
skunk named Anabella, a cat
known as Mr. Conley, a cow by
the name of Miss Butterworth, a
calf known as George and a pas
sel of chickens referred to through
out the picture as the Stebbins
family.
SKUNK MAY STAR
THE animals have as much to do
with the ultimate outcome of
“Fine Day” as the people in the
cast. Annabella, the skunk, in fact,
may be starred in her next picture
as the result of her performance in
this film.
“Oh Baby,” which went into pro
duction next starring Tom Ewell,
Julia Adams and Evelyn Varden,
features a small dog which ap
pears in 90 per cent of the scenes
and was given excellent oppor
tunities to run off with most of
them as he would with somebody
else’s old bone.
“Flame of Araby,” which fol
lowed, stars a beautiful Arabian
horse, supported by such incidental
characters of Jeff Chandler and
Maureen O’Hara.
Roll a cannon ball down any
street at this studio and you'll
break more animal legs than hu
man underpinnings, and it looks
like the rest of the major studios
are trying to keep up in this re
gard. Hardly a picture being made
today doesn’t feature horses, a
dog or cat.
Lassie has gained gargantuan
stature for the canines, Rhubarb is
doing all right for the felines and
Topper, Trigger and Champion are
upholding the prestige of the
equines.
Verily, it’s a great day for us
animals in Hollywood.

LEADING MAN: Mozart — in

for a tour of America.
Bastien) is a shepherd. A shep
herd is no good without sheep
so there is a flock of marionette
sheep and a marionette sheep dog.
While the main action goes on,
one of the sheep wanders off and
is herded back by the dog. That
realistic touch transpires at the
back of the stage, and the audi
ence often dosen’t see it because
they're watching the main action.
But it’s part of Aicher’s passion
for realism,
another exampre or that is in
the ballets. The toy ballerinas
dance with near-human grace.
Two operators are assigned to
each dancer, and the 3%-foot
marionettes are made for the ul
timate in flowing motion.

Their flexibility is the result
of the patience of Anton Aicher,
the foundre. A sculptor, he
brought the skill of his aritistry to
the manufacture of marionettes.
The torso is unlike the typical
puppet torso. Instead of the usual
soild block of wood, it is made
of successive narrow rings. Each
limb has a minimum of two joints.
The littie creatures, when man
ipulated by skilled fisperators, are
able to run, jump o™it gracefully
on a sofa. They're backed up by
500 backdrops, detailed sets, au
thentic costumes and about eight
miles of wire.
The company has 700 marion
ettes, and ten human beings who
make them come alive. They have
a reprtoire of 100 numbers, but
will limit their American per
formances to 12 geparate selec
tions.
There will be three Mozart
operas, two humorous plays about
the composer, three ballets and
four fairy tales. These will be
given in New York for two weeks,
and then in Boston, Philadephlia,
Kansas City, St. Louis, Houston,
Indianapolis, Tulsa and other
cities.
