Combined Jewish
Holiday Begins
On Sunday Night
The combined Jewish holiday of
Shemini Atzeres and Simchas To
rah will begin at sundown on
Sunday evening, and will con
clude the Succos festival or Feast
of Booths.
In the Bible, the eighth day of
this festival was ordained as a
time of “holy convocation.,” Since
Orthodox and Conservative Jews
observe each of the holy days for
two days, the ninth day was en
titled Simchas Torah, the day of
“Rejoicing in the Torah.” Reform
Jews, however, include this cele
bration with that of the eighth
day.
The Torah, the first five books
of the Bible, is found in the syna
gogue in the form of a parchment
scroll written in Hebrew. Divided
into weekly portions, the Torah is
read in itis entirety throughout
the course of each year, and that
day on which the reading is com
pleted and begun anew is Simchas
Torah. Such is the love of the
Jewish people for the Torah and
its teachings that this day ranks
as one of the happiest of holidays..
On Simchas Torah, the worship
pers march in processions in the
synagogue, the men carrying the
Torah and the children waving
banners,
In Athens, the holiday service
will be conducted by Rabbi Sam
uel Glasner in the Temple of Con
gregation Children of Israel, Jack
son and Hancock streets, at 7:30
on Sunday evening. The children
will be given specially designed
flags and will join in the Torah
procession.
The general public is cordially
invited to attend. :
