Russia’s Order

MOSCOW, — One of the most
popular social institutions in Rus
sia is the Russian bath.
Like its foreign counterpart,
the famous Finnish bath and the
Turkish bath, the Russian bath is
a place where one relaxes as well
as gets clean,
It is an exceedingly popular
form of treatment for “the morn
ing after” as well as for just or
dinary fatigue.
You check your overcoat, hat
and overshoes as you go in. Then
you buy a ticket and mount the
stairs to the bath.
In the men’s section there is a
large room for disrobing with
attendants who look after your
garments, Scales are handy for
those who wish to check their
weight “before and after.”
. There is a large central room
kept at a high temperature by
steam from Moscow’s central
heating station, This room has
numerous spigots of hot and cold
water and benches for persons
‘washing, using basins furnished
in the room.
Going through this room one
enters the steaming room. This
chamber has a very high celing
‘and a stairway leading up to an
upper level near the ceiling. It is
filled with live—invisible—steam,
At the bottonr of the room the
temperature is warm. You fill a
basin with cold water and start
to mount the stairs. As you go up
the stairs the temperature in
creases until when you are stand
ing on the upper level the tem
perature induces.an intense sweat,
You dash cold water on yourself
from the basin to keep from be
ing overheated. You can stay
here as long as you can stand it,
but most people spend not more
than 10 to 15 minutes in this
stage.
After this you can take a show
er and go to the massage room,
Here professional masseurs take
over. They wash you down most
thoroughly with the aid of a “mo
chalka” as it is called, made of
linden tree shavings. And they
massage. :
After the massage you can go to
the swimming pool for a dip.
Many customers go from the pool
back to the steam room and con
tinue the routine as long as they
desire.
’ By the time you have dressed
and are ready to leave the whole
process has absorbed as much as

The -Russian bath is patronized
regularly by many Russians who
have good 'bathing facilities in
their own homes, Such people are
attracted by the masseurs, the
steamy room, the pools, and also
by the social aspects. Most people
go to the bath with friends. It is
a good place to chat.
