Experts List Six
Reasons For Egg
Production Here
Listing six resnsons why many
Georgia farmers are in a good po
sition to make profits from com
mercial egg production projects, J.
W. Fanning, State Extension Serv
ice agricultural economist, said this
week that indications point to
greater egg production on farms
during the next year.
Reasons given by Mr. Fanning
for increased egg production in
this state include:
Commercial egg production
brings in money daily or weekly
and helps balance other farming
operations from which cash is re-
celved only once a year. With
nidny from différent sources,
farming is less risky. The most
suecessful farmers in Georgia have
a well-balanced business.
Egg farming makes full use of
labor. Hens and growing pullets
require care every day of the
year, About two hours a day
will care for 500 pullets. It is the
type of work that almost anyone
can do. Thus, when commercial
egg production is made a part of
the farming system, it makes full
use of all labor on the farm, Work
ing with hens means dollars every
week. Five hundred hens should
earn SI,OOO to $2,000 a year.
Ideal for Farms :
Commercial egg production is
ideal for snrall farms. One acre
of good pasture is enough to grow
out 500 strong pullets. Small
acreage will grow the corn, wheat
and oats needed by growing and
laying pullets. About half of the
feed for laying chickens can be
fed ,in the form of grains grown
'6n the farm. Hens convert theul
grains into high-priced meat and
eggs. In addition hens produce
very valuable manure which will
increase the yields of grains.
These things mean high dollar re
turns per acre which are neces
sary for small farms.
Georgia has thousands of farmers
too small to compete on even terms
with other sections in field crop
production. These farms are
ideally suited to the profitable
production of high-quality com
mercial eggs as a major source of
income.
Commercial Eggs
Commercial egg production fits
our farms. It is a profitable busi
ness It makes full use of labor.
On small farms it can easily be a
major source of income. It is
fairly easy to get into the business
and grow with it. Housing and
equipment can be financed. Half
of the feed can be grown on the
