[Gms like these shew the man in your life that you've given thought
and care to your Christmas shopping. Sport jacket (left) is in

By GAILE DUGAS i
Women shopping for Christmas
gifts for men, find the job just as
puzzling as do men, shopping for
gifts for women.
~ One temptation is to buy a man
a half dozen shirts just because he
happens to need them.
Another temptation is to come
right out and ask the man what
- he wants but this somehow, takes
the surprise element out of Christ
mas morning. It scarcely seems
worth the bother of wrapping it
up if he knows just what he’s go
ing to get.
Actually, it is quite possible to
buy a man a gift that he’ll like,
that will surprise him and at a
price that isn’t staggering.
Most men use, or would like to
use, after-shave tale. When tale
comes packaged in a black boot
topped by a tan suede cuff, you've
a gift with originality. The boot
~can hold pencils or cigarettes when
| it’i empty, making it twice as use
ful.
The house that makes it also
packages a fine shaving soap in a
flat, horseshoe-shaped clear glass
container that’s grooved ready for
new use as an ash tray.
For the man who travels a lot,
there’s a new travel kit in a wov
en plaid that holds six unbreak
able squeeze bottles containing
shave lotion, tale, cologne, spray
deodorant, brushless shave cream
and hairdressing. And there’s
plenty of room for a razor, tooth
brush and other essentials.
A lighter is always a good gift
for a man. When it’s a butane
lighter that boasts a disposable
butane cartridge good for more
than two thousand lights, it’s a
} Merry Christmas indeed. Two
| cartridges last the average smoker
l a year and the lighter comes in
’ satin-finished chrome or a gold or
silver plate.
| Getting back to this matter of
| shirts, they’re a fine Christ
i mas gift when they’re not run-of
{ the-mill. No man ever has enough,
‘ just as no woman ever has encugh
I hats.
An authentic clan tartan pattern
| in all-viscose rayon that's com
ipletely washable makes the ideal
gift shixct. &
It comes in plaids of the Mac-
Cleod, MacPherson and Gordon
clans, and can be laundered in the
washing machine.
Another shirt that’s a good gift
‘ possibly is a Glen Urquhart plaid
in pure wool cashmere that's
‘ washable, but not in the machine.

This one has to be done by hand.
The sports coats that go over
these shirts might be in soft Scot
tish cashmere with deep pockets
for pipe. Another good choice is
one made of Scoftish cashmere
and lamb’s wool in a hand-tailored
hound’s-tooth check,
Few women would be so brave
as to march into a store and buy
a man a hat for Christmas. Even
fewer women know what a tele
scope crown is or how men’s hat
sizes run. ;
The solution, then, lies in a hat
gift certificate that will allow a
man to cover his pate any way he
pleases, from a homburg to a snap
%brim, from conservative brown to
something snappy with a feather
in the band. All you have to do
is hand it to him.

Enters Training
Vaux Owen, Manager, Georgia
VA Regional Office, today an
nounced that Bruce H. Caudell of
Ashland is the first Georgia vet
eran of the Korean War to enter
training under Public Law 894
which is set up to rehabilitate dis
abled Korea veterans.
Mr. Caudell, 18 years of age, has
been inducted into training for a
30-months course in Automobile
Mechanics at the North Georgia
Trade and Vocational School,
Clarkesville, Georgia. Residing on
Route 1 in Ashland he commutes
30 miles per day to and from his
classes. .
Caudell volunteered for the U.
S. Army in July, 1949 and was
with the 2nd Division, 9th Inf.
Regt. when he was ambushed by
the enemy approximately 35 miles
south of the Manchurian Border
on November 1, 1950. He sus
tained the complete loss of his
right eye.
“Bruce Caudell should make a
good student.” A. R. Robertson,
VA Training Officer, said, “and I
am looking forward to assisting
him as much as possible.”
Drift fences, similar to U. S.
snow fences, have been erected in
Saudi Arabia to control the drift
ing desert sands which threaten to
swallow up the railroad tracks
built in the last three years.

FRIENDS OF THE LAND
Columbus 1, Ohio
Currently, the problem of mois
ture brings up the question of the
possibility of producing rain when
it is needed. Dr. Vincent Schaefer
from Dr. Langmuir’s General Elec
tric Company Weather Research
Division at Schenectady, explained
the scientific aspects of rainmak
ing to the Tenth Annual Institute
on Conservation, Nutrition and
Health held in Chicago by Friends
of the Land. It was quite appa
rent from what he said that clouds
can be seeded and rain produced.
Another aspect of the problem is
overdoing, since overseeding may
prevent rain entirely. Dr. Schae
fer suggested the use of artificial
clouds (possibly of fertilizer) to
protect growing crops from frost,
or even cool night air, and thus
hasten their development.
“Down through the centuries
man has dreamed of controlling
the weather,” Dr, Schaefer de
clared. “From time to time, he has
made sporadic attempts to employ
physical and chemieal principles
to modify the atmosphere in order
to obtain more rain or snow. Un
til 1946 these attempts were not]
based on reactions which could do
more than affect very small areas |
of the atmosphere, if at .all." l
With field demonstrations re- |
vealing that dry ice and silver
iodide could be used to affect large
regions of the atmosphere by pro-l
ducing ice crystals in cold, moist
air, and the new phase of experi~
mental meteorology was inaugu
rated, Dr. Schaefer related. The
momentum which has now devel
cped in this field in our country,
as well as most other regions of
the world, may have profound ef
fects on the future development of
agriculture, especially in marginal |
areas and in regions where violent
storms make the harvesting of
crops an uncertain venture. |
By exercising some control over
the several types of submicroscopic
nuclei which float in the air and
are related to the formation of
rain and snow in clouds, a number
of interesting effects may easily
be produced in various kinds of |
clouds, according to Dr. Schaefer.
Up to the present time, the major
emphasis in cloud seeding opera
tions designed to increase rain or
snowfall has been directed toward
the modification of supercooled
clouds. There is no reason why
important changes cannot be in
«duced in some warm ecloud sys-{
{ems, especially those which form

.~ “When we consider the great
rivers of moisture constantly flow
ing through the atmosphere, much
of which never reaches the grounc.
it is of the utmost importance tha:
we thoroughly investigate everv

Schaefer emphasized. “Care mus

not produce adverse effects in

Banner-Herald
An unusual egg, very large and
of very peculiar shape, was
brought by the Banner-Herald of
fice Wednesday by Buford Smith
of 194 Prince Avenue.
Mr. Smith has been employed
by the Pouliry Department of the
University and he said that while
he has seen some unusual eggs
during that time, he had seen none
to compare with this one.
The egg appeared to be a double
one but in reality it was a single
egg. The shell was so thick, Mr.
Smith said, that when it was
placed in the candling machine, no
light could be seen through it.
Exposure of 1-30,000 of a sec
