200-YEAR-OLD CRAFT: In Vienna's famed Augarten poreelain
factery, an artist puts the finishing touches on Corrida, newest
figurine in the 200-year-old Viennese art craft.
Prince Eugene Sfill Hero To Vienna
—ln Porcelain
BY JULIUS HUMI
NEA Staff Correspondent
VIENNA, Austria. — (NEA) —
After more than 200 years, Vien
na’'s world-famous porcelain is
still one of the chief foreign cur
rency earners in this war-damag
ed city.
" Craftsmen like Joseph Sissa
bach, 62, who has worked in the
Augarten factory for 45 years, and
140 other employes, including
young girls with paint brushes,
turn out plates, vases and figur
ines with tools and methods al
most the same as those used 220
years ago.
Most of the output these da%s is
in plates and vases, but the deli
cate figurines which depict scenes
and costumes from all parts of the
globe are the big money makers.
The Augarten factory, now run
by a state-controlled company,
got its start when the Dutch court
artist Claudius Innocentius du Pa
quier nvade a porcelain figurine of
Printe Eugene in honor of that
hero’s Balkan victories,
In his Viennese court, Charles
VI, emperor of the Holy Roman
Empire, was fascinated by the
tiny statue made of “Chinese
white wonder earth,” and author
ized the Dutch artist to go into
business.

is still one of the factory’s most‘
popular pieces. The newest one,
called “Corrida” (Bullfight), is
rapidly becoming popular despite
a price tag of 7,000 Austrian shil
lings ($800).
Principal customers for the fac
tory’s “extra fine” dinnerware, all
hand-painted, are in South Amer
ica, Scandinavia and Spain, with
some being exported to the U. S,
England and German. The cost
for a complete set is about 20,000
shillings ($800).
NO CHANGE IN COINAGE
LONDON — (AP) — Britian has
deeided against converting this
nation’s currency to the decimal
system,
The new Conservative Choncel
lor of the Exchequer, Richard
Austen Butler, told the House of
Commons that suggestions to divi
de the shilling into 10 pennies —
instead of the present 12 — just
‘aren’t practical.
“The replacement of the exist
ing bronze coinage by new coins
of different value would involve
an impossible burden on our pre
sent resources of material and
labor. The alternative of increas
ing by 20 per cent the value of
the bronze coinage to win circula
tion is likewise unsatisfactory,”
he declared.
