Capfain Steward
Honored With
Bronze Star
Mrs. R. A. Steward, 255 Hall
Street, recently received word
from her son, Captain Francis X.
Steward, who has seen service in
both World War II and the Korean
campaign, that he was honored on
the thirtieth of November with the
Bronze Sar Medal. Captain Stew
ard was awarded the medal fer his
valorious actlon in Korea and
was present at the reviewing stand
at Fort Bragg when the entire
Regiment passed in review in his
honor.
Mrs. Steward is the mother of
five sons, all of whom were in
service at some time during the
past war and the Korean conflict.
Two of her sons have received the
Presidential Citation. Captain
Francis Steward received the
Presidential Citation during the
past war for his part in holding
the line when he and the other
members of the 101st Airborne
division were dropped over Ru
mania at the wrong location.
Captain Steward has lived most
of his life here in Athens where
he is a well-known and popular
personality. He attended both
Athens High Schol and the Uni
versity of Georgia where he ma
jored in Agricultural Engineering.
Captain Steward i at present
stationed at Fort Bragg where he
has been joined by his wife and
three children. He married an
Athens girl, Miss Ruby Spratlin
and they have three children rang
ing in age from two months to
four years. o
In Korea for over seven months,
Captain Steward was wounded and
returned to the United States only
recently.
Mrs. Steward, mother of the
decorated air man, has lived here
in Athens all of her life. She, al
though extremely proud of all of
her boys admitted that medals and
such things confuse her since there
are so many and exgmsed her
feelings in saying “I'm so glad
that he’s home.”

Conditions for physics research
at the University of Georgia are
better now than they have been in
a half-century, according to Dr. E,
H. Dixon, head of the physics de
partment,
The greatly improved status of
physics research has been brought
about with the recent completion
of new physics laboratories and
the installation of new e%ulpment,
he said.
The ground floor of the Univer
sity’s physics building has been
turned over entirely to iaborato
ries for basic physics research., An
area of almost 4,000 square feet of
space has been converted for this
purpose,
What was once wasted space
has been made into five individual
laboratories, four photographic
rooms, a shop room, and a storage
room, Although basic research is
very expensive, Dr, Dixon expects
the University’s work in that field
to move forward in the space now
provided for it.
Research underway at the Uni
versity now includes the absorp
tion and scattering of radiation
from cobalt 60, ultraviolet and
visible spectroscopy, nricrowave
spectroscopy, and the thermody
namics of barrier layers.
The University does all basic
rather than applied physics re
search.
The lowest elevation on the Ai
rican continent is the Libyan des
ert, 440 feet below sea level.

Merging Of Tax
Offices To B
Discussed H
With the tax payers of Clarke
County be served more efficiently
and more economically by the con
solidating of the county offices of
Tax Receiver and Tax Collector?
This question will be discussed
freely in an open Town Meeting
scheduled for Tuesday evening,
December 4, at 8 o'clock, in the
Superior Court Room of the Coun
ty Courthouse. Carlisle Cobb will
serve as chairman and will ex
plain the present law and the legal
aspects should a change be recom
mended.
The meeting has been calied by
a group of representative citizens
who met informally to review the
results of a study made by the
League of Women Voters of Ath
ens. . This study showed that 75 of
Georgia’s 159 counties now have
a Tax Commissioner holding the
combined office. A Board of Tax
Assessors attests the accuracy and
completeness of the tax list or
digest prepared by the Tax Com
missioner. A full summary of the
League report appeared in the
Banner-Herald on November 24.
Mrs. C. C. Wilson, President of
the League, states that the or
ganization has been gratified by
the interest shown"in the sudy and
in the meeting. She wishes to em
phasize, however, that while the
proposed change has League sup
port, the meeting is in no sense
under League control. All per
sons having pertinent informa
tion or questions are urged to
present their views.,
The legislators of Clarke County,
Senator Robert Stephens, Repre
sentative Chappelle Matthews and
Representative Grady Pittard,
plan to be present to hear the
views of their constituents.
In this period of ever-increasing
taxes, it is to the advantage of
every citizen that all tax offices
should be conducted with the ut
most competence, efficiency and
fairness, as well as integrity, the
League says. This consolidation
of offices is suggested as one step.
Will it be instrumenta! in achiev
ing the desired result?, {he group
asks.
.
City Hall Now
Has After-Hours
. .
Bill Depository
For the convenience of citizens,
and especially those who work
late in the afternoons or find it
otherwise inconvenient to pay a
visit to the City Hall during cffice
hours, an after-hours depository
box has been placed on the door
on ihe Hancock Avenue entrance.
On the outside is a container
with a supply of small manila en
velopes in which the citizen can
place the payment for his water
bill or taxes. The box is locked
and the payment will be safe,
