known ag the Clarke Count{ Wo
men Voters. Although with its
name changed, it ig still the first
and original organization of Wo
men Voters in Athens. She de
votes a great deal of time to this
organization which has become
one of the most outstanding wo
men’s political local organizations
in the State, carrying high the
banner for better government, lo
cal, State and National, Clarke
County Women Voters carry on a
program the year round to create
public understanding of important
political issues, good citizenship,
education and health.
Before coming to Athens to live,
Mrs. Russell and her husband
were residents of Winder, Georgia
for a time. Mr. Russell is a
brothér of the late Chief Justice
Russell and an uncle of the pre
sent United States Senator Rich
ard B. Russell. Later they re
moved to Washington, D. C where
Mr. Russell was connected with
the U. S. Treasury Department and
Mrs. Russell kept abreast of the
political life by attending sessions
of Congress, often in company
with such well-known women as
Mrs. Rebecca Felton, who later
became the first woman Senator
in the United States, and Mrs.
Helen Dortch Longstreet, widow
of General Longstreet.
Mrs. Russell considers hearing
Woodrow Wilson give his Declara
tion of War address in 1917, one of
the very great priviledges and
highlights of her life. Admission
to this was by ticket only and she
had none. A friend, unable to at
te{]d, sent her ticket to Mrs. Rus
sell.
Reside Here
In Athens the Russells reside at
457 Morton Avenue. They have one
son, William, an instructor in
Marion Military Institute, Marion,
Alabama. Their home is a simple
white cottage, surrounded by
trees, many of which are pines,
and flowering shrubs, the whole
outlay covering an entire block,
giving to the observer a sense of
freedom and quiet akin to that of
former days.
Inside the home one comes face
to-face with many prized posses
sions passed down through the
Day and Russell families. Among
these heirlooms is a fine cld grand
father’s clock and a pair of brass
candle holders dating back as far
as 600 years.
, It is in this setting one finds
Mrs. Russell today. She is very
modest about her activities, yet
happily reminiscent, always look
ing forward with enthusiasm to
the next election day, and, still
wondering why she came to be
selected as the first woman in
Georgia to serve at the ballot
box. .
Eleven stone heads found in
Southern Mexico are too heavy to

have been made.
Concentrated milk now is being
produced which has the taste and
nutritive value of regular milk.
