Georgia Graduates Listed High
InThe “Who's Who" Catalogue '
Of the 54 American colleges
with at least 100 living alumni in
«“Who's Who in America,” the
University of Georgia leads all
from the stand-point of the per

A careful look at the latest edi
tion of “Who’s Who” indicates that
the oldest chartered state univers
ity is growing “younger” from the
standpoint of age and number of
graduates listed in “Who’s Who.”

In Athens, 424 E. Broad Street - Phone 2600. Also in Atlanta, Dalton, Macon, Rome
ly 72 graduates in “Who's Who,":
but in the 1950-51 edition this
number was increased 71 per cent
to 123. With this figure Georgia
ranks fifth in the South and 46th
in America,
A Study
This information is' from'a study
by B. W. Kunkel and D, B. Fren~
tice which appears in the current
issue of “School and Society.”
They write that they believe that
such a study of ccllege alumni who
have - attained positions of emi-'
nence may throw some light “upon
the question of how certain edu
cational policies and practices have
affected the output of leading
alumni over the years.”
Perhaps the most significant in
formation to be derived from the
i study with regard to the Universi=
‘ty of Georgia is the fact that its
graduates in “Who's Who” who
have graduated since 1934 exceed
on a percentage basis the national
norm for these years.
For instance, the graduates dur
ing the period 1935-39 constitute,
on a national basis, only 1.2 per
cent of the total number of college
graduates listed in “Who’s Who,”
Georgia’s score for this period is
25. And for the J)eriod begin
ning with 1940, the University tops
all others on a percentage basis.
100 Graduates
The University is the only Geor
gia School with 100 or more grad
| uates in “Who's Who,” and only
' four Southern schools top Georgia,
They are Texas with 252; Virginia,
‘ 211; North Carolina, 207; and Van
derbilt, 144. Alabama has 121
’ graduates in “Who's Who,” and
j Washington and Lee, 116. <
During the period 1910-24, over
| 56 per cent of Georgia’s represen
| tatives graduated. Georgia’s larg
| est percentage for any five-year
| period is 20.5 for 1920-24. Many
| schools’ highest percentages fall in
older age groups.
Only 10 of the 54 colleges with
100 or more representatives have
representatives who have grad
uated since 1939, They are Har
vard, Yale, Chicago, Indiana,
Texas, Brown, George Washing
ton, Washington, and (Georgia.
Led by President O. C. Ader
hold, the University of Georgia
catalog lists 67 faculty members
who are in “Who’s Who.” Many of
these, however, did not receive
their baccalaureate degrees—the
basis for the study—at Georgia.
CAN'T BEAR IT
BANFTF, Alta.—(AP)—A woman
and her son leaving the upper Hot
Springs Pool recently were star
tled—to put it mildly—when a
mother grizzly with two cubs stcod
in the road a few yards away.
Hurrying back to the Hot Springs
office, they telephoned a warning
to the folk at their own house
nearby.
The woman’s husband dis
charged a shot gun into the air to
get the bears headed for the
_ mountain bush again,

The poilice said they are sure

Peter Ernest John Grainger, 25,
a self-assured, well-educated for

The U. S. Army lists “hillbilly”
Grainger as AWOL,
Far from being the unschooled;
innocent child of the wilds he
claimed to be, said the provincial
police, Grainger is a London born
former officer in the British Army
who turned up in Canada in Dec

When Army recruiters in San
Antonio, Tex., heard from Grain
ger Nov. 3 that he never saw an
automobile, that he was reared
on goat's milk and had never
seen an honest-to-goodness town,
the Army men were captivated.
Grainger was inteviewed, lionized
taken riding in automobiles and
shown San Antonio’s night life.
Then, he was sent to the army
proving ground at Aberdeen, Md.
on Nov. 12, he disappeared.
Gainger was found Wednesday
walking along the highway be~
tween Sudbury and Sault Ste.
Marie. A tourst camp operator
called police because the man's
behavior was strange. Police sald
