News From The
Veteran Corner
Here are authoritative answers
from the Veterans Administration
for four questions of interest to
former servicemen: .
Q. About a year and a half ago,
I filed a claim with VA for disa
bility compensation. Circumstances
that came up made it impossible
for me to report for a physical
examination, so I just dropped the
whole matter. Now, I'd like to
follow through on my claim. Is
it too late?
A. It's toc ate to follow through
on your original application, but
you may file a new one, Since VA
didn’t hear 'rom you within one
year from ! e time you were or
dered to rcoort for an examina
tion, it m y not take action on
your original application.
Q. I am drawing disability conf
pensation from VA, and I expeet
to be recalled to active military
duty in the near future. Will the
VA payments continue, even
though I'll be in uniform?
A. No. VA compensation pay
ments may not be made to persons
receiving ry for active military
service, our compensation will
be suspended while you're in serv
ice.
Q. May 1 still apply for my first
National Service Life Insurance
dividend—the one covering the
period from the time I took the
insurance to the anniversary date
in 19487
A. Yes, you still may apply.
Write to the VA district office that
has your NSLI records, giving
your full name, present address,
the number of your policy or poli
cies, and your service serial num
bers.
Q. Will VA pay for the medical
care of my dependents?
A. No. Under existing laws, on
ly veterans are eligible for medi
cal care from VA.
(Veterans living in Georgia
who wish further information
about their benefits should write
the VA Regional Office at 105
Pryor Street, N. E, Atlanta 3,
or contact local VA Office, Room
306, New P. O. Building, Ath
ens.)
HORSES’ EXPENSES SPIRAL
HALLANDALE, Fla. — (AP)—
The high cost of living has reach
ed horses and horsemen, too. A
check on feed bills finds the cur
rent charge for a sack of oats is
so.go. Five years ago the same sack
cost $5.25. Ten years ago it brought
$4. Hay now brings SBO a ton com
pared to $65 in 1946 and S4O in
1941. Straw, which is merely bed
ding for the horses, is priced at
:70. Ten years ago it cost only
20.
Racing officials estimate that
by winning one race during the
season & horse should just about
break even for his keep.
North Dakota has 5256 miles of
railroads; South Dakota, 3959.
