MAIL FoOM Six.. . A ki s ei:ort o help parents prove to skep

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — (NEA)
—An unemployed Philadelphia
man who likes to brighten the
lives of youngsters is giving the
post office at Fairbanks a busy
time right now,
He keeps walking in' . the
Philadelphia office of Pan Amer
ican World Airways with big
batches of letters to be flown up
here, stamped with a North Pole
cachet, and mailed bhack to the
children as letters from Santa
Claus.
He doesn’t really know any of
the youngsters.
“I just walk around,” he ex
plains, “and I talk to kids. I pick
out ones that look a little needy.
I get their names. And then I
write the letters to them from
Santa Claus.”

dreds of thousands of. mothers,
fathers, uncles and aunts are
using the idea for their own chil
dren,
The airline, ‘which created the
good-will service to help combat
cynicism toward the old-fashioned
belief in Santa Claus, figures it
has confirmed the faith of 200,000
youngsters in the last three years.
This is the way it works:
When a child writes his. letter |
to Santa, his mother or fatherl
writes a reply as if Santa were
writing it., The letter is address
ed to the child, stamped with an
airmail stamp, then mailed or de
livered to any of the airline’s of
fices or agents. |
Along with thousands of others, |
it’s flown to Fairbanks—the clos
est convenient post office to the
North Pole. There it's stamped
with the North Pole Cachet and
mailed back to the child.
If the airline gets the letter by
Dec. 14, the child will have it by
Christmas day. '
One mother who tried the idea |
wrote afterwards that her young
sters “sat entranced” when they
got their notes from Santa, An
other wrote that “our little daugh
ter always wondered why Santa
never wrote letters {o tell her
why he didn’t have certain toys
and would have to substitute
others.”
One of the airline’s executives
got a somewhat different reac
tion from his eight-year-old
daughter, Judy. He suggested
that as long as she was skeptical
about Santa, why didn’t-she write
him a letter and see?
She turned down the idea. “If
I do write him and there is a
Santa,” she explained, “then he’ll
know I don’t believe in him.”

FARM MACHINERY CARE ]
*RALEIGH, N. C.— (AP) — The |
advice of H. M. Elliy, agriculturall
“engineer for the North Camlinai
State College Extension Service, |
is for farmers to take good care of |
their present farm machinery be- |
cause short supplies of equipmenfl
are in prospect. :
Machinery should be housed |
when not in use because it deteri
orates very rapidly from rust and
other weathering processes, he
said. An implement shed will pay
dividends in prolonging the life
of farm implements. A ftractor |
not in use for 30 days should be |
