METROPOLITAN MUSEUM PURCHASES
DODD PAINTING
“MONHEGAN THEME,” an oil painting by Lamar Dood, head
of the department of .art at the University of Georgia, has been
purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art for its permanent
collection.
The painting is from a sketch Mr. Dodd made at Monhegan, a
small island off the Maine coast. Dodd has made several sketching
trips to Monhegan,
“Monhegan Theme” developed as a composite art expression
fromr hundreds of drawings and water color sketches. Painted in
1949, it has been called one of his “most mature and successful
paintings to date.”
Other permanent collections which have Dodd paintings include
the Wilmington Society of Fine Arts, the International Business
Machines Corporation, the Pepsi-Cola Company, Montclair Art
Museum, High Museum, Telfair Academy, Georgia Museum of Art,
Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Cranbrook Academy of Art, and
the Rochester Memorial Gallery, New York.
Dodd is already represented at the Metropolitan,
A Job: Turning

AP Newsfeatures
FORT EUSTIS, Va.—This Army
post is turning Gl's into gobs.
“And they show an astounding
aptitude for nautical duty,” says
Maj. Ulysses P. Hedrick, of
Geneva, N, Y., commandinf offi
cer of the 449th Harbor Craft and
Marine Maintenance Battalion.
“In 90 days they like the water
better than the land. They'll
probably be sailors the rest of
their lives.”
Hedrick said a Minnesota farm
boy drafted in March likes his
new job so well he has filed an
appltcation with an oil company
for a berth on a tanker after his
Army discharge.

transportation system. It is the
only activity of its kind in the
United States.
Here on the James river, officers
and enlisted personnel learn to
operate the Army’s freight and
supply ships, tugs, landing craft,
fireboats, barges, floating ma
chine shops and T-bgats, which
haul personnel and package
freight. Some men are trained to
be divers, others to operate ma
rine railways. Many are trained
to be stevedores.
Sea Dogs Among Them
Many of Hedrick’'s trainees
are former Navy men or Merchant
Mariners. He says about 40 per
cent have served in the Merchant
Marine and 15 per cent in the
Navy. Many have been stevedores.
Hedrick and his staff teach a
soldier to become a deckhand in
six weeks. Training of deck per
sonnel requires six months and
includes instruction in subjects
ranging from elementary piloting
to celestial navigation. A man
learns to be a small boat skipper
in 90 days. \
The Transportation Corps sends
ships to New York, New Orleans,
Philadelphia and the Great Lakes
for the training of organized re
serve units in ship handing and
in stevedoring.

LURID COURT REPORTING
ROME—(AP)—ltaly is thinking
of doing something about the lurid
court reporting which makes for
eigners gasp.
The Italian press skips nothing
in stories of trials. Details of
crimes, sex perversion,- dope ad
diction and other subjects which
American and British editors
would blue-pencil are described in
detail.
A bill prepared for submission
to the Chamber of Deputies would
change all this. At present the
press can publish anything brought
up in court and it is privileged.
The new law would allow publi
cation only of prosecution charges,
defense pleas and established
facts.

Chairman Issues
Final Call For
PMA Elections
A final call to all farmers of
Clarke County who are eligible to
vote in the PMA farmer committee
elections was made today by C. A.
Ward, chairman of the county
PMA committee, -
The elections are to be held
from 9 a. m. to 4 p. m. on Tues
day, December 11, 1951.
Eligible are farm owners, op
erators, tenants or sharecroppers
who are participating in any of
the programs administered by the
county PMA committee. These in
clude the price support program,
the Agricultural Conservation
Program, and crop insurance—the
latter administered in cooperation
with the Federal Crop Insurance
Corporation.
In the election farmers will vote
for three farmers to serve on the
community PMA committee in
1952, two alternates and a dele
gate to the ceunty convention.
The delecates from the 5 desig
nated agricultural communities in
the county will meet later to elect
a county committee.
As Chairman Ward sees it, with
so many responsibilities in con
nection with the Nation’s defense
program being turned over to
these elected farmer committees it
becomes increasingly important
that these committeemen are the
ones the majority of the farmers
in each community want, Whether
the same committeemen are re
elected or new committeemen
voted in, those names should rep
resent the choice of the farmers in
the community.

MAY SWITCH RAILS -— New

Young, chairman of the Chesa

the railroad business in 1937,

Industrial Firms
To Be Canvassed
For Scrap Mefal
An urgent appeal to business
and industrial firms in Athens and
Clarke county to contribute scrap
metal is being made this week,
with plans underway for a house
to house collection in the residen
tial areas of Athens Sunday.
Proceeds from the sale of the
scrap will go to the Athens Com-=
munity Chest in helping meet the
$61,000 campaign goal for the next
year and the scrap contributed
will aid the national defense pro
gram now requiring increased
amounts of scrap.
Firms having trucks with which
they can deliver their own scrap
metals are requested to take it to
the Loef Company or Georgia
Wrecking Co., and report that the
scrap is being contributed to the
local Community Chest.
This appeal is under joint di
rection of Luther Glass, Clarke
county chairman of the Scrap Mo
biliation Committee, and C. M.
Ridlehuber, 1951 chairman of the
Community Chest campaign.
All types of scrap metal other
than tin cans are needed in the
nation’s defense program and will
help Athens meet its Chest quota
for Red Feather agencies, the
chairmen point out.
Heavy scrap is particularly
needed, National Production Au
thority leaders have explained.
Although scrap may be any kind
of iron and steel that’s gathering
dust—obsolete machines or struc
tures, jigs and fixtures, pulleys
and wheels, chains and track,
valves and pipe—anything with
rust on it.

of $201.50 each for failing to ap

Several minor cases were also
heard by Judge Olin Price,
Sheriff Tommy Huff reported
this morning that Joy Sims Fort=-

bond.
Fortson was charged by a cor

untary manslaughter for the death
of Earl C. Langford, whose body
was found in the outskirts of the
-cemetery last Friday afternoon.
The jury found that Langford
died from blows received in a
fight with Fortson.
Sheriff Huff and Chief Clar
ence Roberts said that City and
County Officers Hardy, McKin
non, Sanders, Allgood, Carter, Mc~
Gahee, Seagraves and Williams
should be commended for their
splendid work in cracking the
case.
Chief Roberts and Sheriff Huff
congratulated Lt. Hardy and De

way they went about identifying
the body, since Langford had no
means of identification on his per
