| COTTON INCREASE FORECAST
| KARACHI, Pakistan — (AP)-—
Cotton crop forecasts for 1951-52
in Pakistan predict an increase
of 6.6 per cent, including a 7.7 per
cent incerase for American variet
ies and a 2.2 per cent decrease for
local types.
Acreage of American varieties
| for the forecast period is 2,747,000,
officials said. Local varieties are
expected to have an acreage of
424,000, In the previous year Am
erican varieties totalled 2,551,000
acres and local varieties 330,000
acres. Favorable weather condi
tions and high market prices have
been listed as responsible for the
increase in acreage.
Scientists only recently proved
that the warm Gulf Stream current
wanders sometimes hundreds of
miles as it shifts its course in re
sponse to unknown pressures.

SQUATTER’S RIGHTS :
SINGPORE — (AP) — The
Singapore government is confront
ed with the problem of ousting
squatters from the land where
it plans to construct a new munici
pal airport.
The Singapore branch of the
Malayan Chinese Association has
been asked by the squatters to aid
in their protest against the new
civil airdrome. Housing is so dif
ficult a problem in Singapore that
thousands have squatted on gov
ernment as well as private pro
perty and thrown up ramshackle
huts for shelter.
A new air service is expected to
be operating soon between New
Zealand and Tahiti. It will follow
a route by way of Western Samoa
and the Cook Islands.
