“Woman of the Year” for 1951.
She s Marguerite Higgins,
plucky and pretty young foreign
correspondent for the New York
Herald Tribune, whose coverage
of the Korean War brought her
both national headlines and & Pu- |

More recently the pert, blonde
Maggie has traveled around the
world writing a series, “Au»mnli
Russia’s Curtain,” authored a|
book, “War In Korea” and covered ‘
the United States on a l(‘fluxei
tour. !
The only newspaperwoman on |
the Korean battlefront, Maggie |
won international attention when, |

It is interesting to note that in
the poll of women’s editors of
Associated Press newspapers, run
ner-up for the title of outstanding
woman of the year was Princess
‘Elizabeth. whose recent American
| tour made miles of headlines.
‘ Miss Higgins was born in Hong
| Kong of an American army officer
| father and a French mother, went
to schools in France and Englandi
and wound up with honors at the
University of California and Co
lumbia University’s School of
Journalism.
Foreign Correspondent
She joined the Herald Tribune
in 1942, and became a foreign cor~
respondent in 1944, worked in the
;London and Paris bureaus, moved
on to Austria with the 7th Army
during the closing days of World
‘War II and soon afterward was
made head of the Berlin Bureau.
When the Korean War broke
out she made a beeline from the
Tokyo bureau to the battlefront,
where for 23 weeks she reported
all aspects of the fighting, under
going dangers and hardships of
the front.

Tops in the field of sports is
Maureen Connolly, 16-year-old
winner of the National Women'’s
Tennis Championship, a teen-ager
who has provided the nation’s
sports writers with a fresh and in
spiring new personality to bright
en up their pages.
In literature, the vote goes to
Rachel Carson, author of the best
selling “The Sea Around Us.”
Judy Garland tops the list in
the theater, for her sensational
success in bringing vaudeville

Sabin, one of three women doctors
who were winners of the Ameri
can Public Health Association’s
1951 Lasker Awards. Now di
rector of health for Denver, Dr.
Sabin previously was the first wo
man on the faculty of Johns Hop
kins Medical School, first woman
scientist on the staff of the Rock
efeller Institute, first woman ad
mitted to the National Academy of
Scientists and first woman mem
ber of the American Association
of Anatomists.

all the colieges in the University
System of Georgia met in Atlanta

inent Atlanta Psychiatrist, will ad
dress the local chapter of the Nat
fonal Vocational Guidance Asso
ciation at its annual dinner meet
ing here December 17.

reau at the University of Georgia.
