EXPENSIVE FARMLAND
AMES, la.—(AP)—An acre of
Towa’s good dark farm soil costs
more today than any time in the
last 30 years.
Not since the 1920-21 land boom
has the state’s farm land com
manded such high prices.
Jowa farms are now selling on
the average for $212 an acre, W.
G. Murray, head of the depart
ment of economics and sociology
at lowa State College, reported to
day in his annual survey of farm
land prices.
This is a sls increase over last
year's average acre price of $197.
It is one more step upward 1n the
steady climb of lowa farm pricesl
which started from a low of $69
an acre in 1933.

Santa And The Magic Mirror
SYNOPSIS: Belinda and Tommy
enter the mysterious room. It is
entirely bare except for a very
shabby, milky mirrer. Belinda
hides it under her sweater. Now,
unable to look inte the mirror,
the giants become horrible hoblins
once again, They pull Belinda's
hair and hurt Tommy and in
freight they flee up the stairs and
hide under a bed. Belinda feels
the mirror pressing against her
and realizes this must be what
makes the giants gentle, She tries
to give it back to them, but they
knock her down and the mirror
breaks into a thousand pieces,
CHAPTER 13
THE CHASE
Belinda stared in dismay at the
shattered glass surrounding her,
“Now see what you have done!”
she cried. She stamped her foot.
It was your very own fault. I
was trying to return the old thing
THE BANNER-HERALD, ATHENS, GEORGIA
to you.”
But the giants seemed mot to
care about the mirror. With a hol
ler they charged for Belinda. She
dodged between their legs and
flew back to the bedroom. Now
all seemed hopeless for the gianis
were at the door,
But Tommy had crawled from
under the bed and rushed across
the room to a large fireplace.
“Quick!” he aclled. “Remember
Santa’s second secret!”
With a gasp of relief Belinda
ducked into the fireplace beside
Tommy. Each child iaid a finger
beside his nose, whispered some
words, and up the chimney they
rose!
“T 7 it was a close call,” said
Tommy when the two children
reached the roof of the castle.
“But we're still in a post,” said
Belinda. “For how shall we get
down?”
Truly there seemed no way to
get down. They could neither
jump nor climb to the ground.
They scurried around leoking for
an escape. Tommy found a trap
door,
“We might as well try it,” he
said.
Belinda agreed., They flung
open the door and dropped
through. They found themselves
in the topmost hall of the castle
—seven floors above the ground.
A great staircase spiralied down
through the very heart of the
castle. Tommy and Belinda started
down the stairs. But scarcely had
they gone a dozen steps® when
they heard the seven giants storm
ing up the very same stairs.
Tommy sat down right where
he was. “I just can’t go any fur
ther,” he said. His face was white
with exhaustion.
“We can’t stay here!” exclaimed
Belinda.
“There’s no where else to go,”
moaned Tommy,
“Oh, yes there is!” cried Be
linda. “I have an id:a. Have you
ever slid down bannisters?”

- “Never,” said Tommy. “My |
father would never have per
mitted it in our house.”
“Well, you're going to now,”
gsaid Belinda. *®"Quick! Follow
me!”
She put one leg over the ban-~
nister and gave a push. In an
instant she was flying down
through the heart of the castle.
Tommy gave a whoop of joy and
slid down behind her.
Down, down, down they zoomed
past the seven startled giants, past
the seven floors to th 2 very door
of the castle. Without a pause
they ran outdoors, climbed on
Santa’s little sled and sped away.
When they were back safe with
Santa both children were sad and
forlorn.
Santa laughed at them both.
“Suppose you tell me everything
that happened,” he said. So Be
linda and Tommy told him about
the strange mirror and how much
it had seemed to mean to the
giants. i
Santa was very excited, t
“That’s the secret of it all!” he |
cried. 1
“But it was only a mirror,” pro- |
tested Belinda. “Cracked and
bumpy. What could be its use?”
“It was a piece of ice from the
Frozen Pond of Winnie the
Witeh,” said Santa. “This is magic
ice and will melt the hearts of
all who see their reflection in it.”
“But why didn’'t they tell us?”
asked Tommy.
“They didn’t know themselves. |
They knew they liked to look in |
