IT'S “GOT A LIGHT"—A cig
ret with a built-in lighter is
the inventicn of Ernest Heimo,
jemical manufacturer of Fri
bourg, Switzerland. Tobacco in
the eigaret is saturated with a
ret material which ignites
when rubbed gently against side
the- package. ' There’s. no
flame and no need to puff to
start. Several European and
American tobacco firms are re
ported interested in the idea.

In the corn production contest
sponsored by the Bogart F. F. A,
chapter and the Georgia Associa
tion of Future Farmers of Am
erica, Perry Michael is the win
ner for the northern section of
O-onee county with a yield of
121 bushels on a one acre plot
of land. This yield was accomp
lished without irrigation and under
adverse weather conditions. In the
words of Perry’s father, Mr. Her
man Michael. ‘He may have made
200 bushels had we received more
rainfall at certain critical tnmes.”
Perry planted a hybrid corn,
Ga. 101, in May. after throughly
preparing the soil. The plot of
ground last year grew lespedeza.
He used 1600 pounds of a 4-8-6
fertilizer and side dressed with
320 pound of ammonium nitrate,
This gave 166 pounds of nitrogen,
128 pounds of phosphoric acid and
96 pounds of potash of the acre.
Also 5 tons of stable manure were
applied. The rows were about 40
inches apart and the plants aver
aged about 10.8 inches apart in the
row. This spacing indicated that
there were 16,125 plants to the
acre. Truly Perry was aiming at
a yield of 200 bushels, but ac
cording to his recor young
Lichael's eost.per bushxms only
46 cents.
Perry will receive an award of
membership in the One Hundred
Bushel Corn Club sometime in
January. Only four other boys
from the Bogart chapter have re
ceived this award. They are Clar
ence (Sonny) Thornton, jr., Tal
madge Harrison, Mill Norris and
Jimmie Class.
Runner up in the contest this
year was Clarence Thornton, jr.,
with a yield of 94 bushels. Trail
ing closely behind were Vernon
Jackson, 85 bushels; Talmadge
Harrison, 85 bushels; Donald Ham
mond, 70 bushels; Robert Downs,
64 bushels; Troy Holliday, 58 bus
hels and Donnie Norris, 47 bus-

NEW YORK, Jan. 1. — Rocky
Mlarciano can win the heavyweight
¢ mpionship of the world within
t ears, declares Tim Cohane,
foorts editor of Look Magazine, in
th issue just out.
cky is as hungry for the
t as the Jack Dempsey who
g ilated Jess Willard in 1919,
( ne says. It would be silly and
to both men to call Rocky
nd Dempsey the Look article
states, but it is a fact they have
some notes in common. g ¢
Like Dempsey, Mareiano ' can
take it and give it out, Like Dem
psey, he has the strength to mave
@ bigger man around. Like Dem-
Psey, he benefits from astute
managerial direction.
. Maricano’s manager, Al Weill,
is referred to as ‘ruthless, shrewd,
Ideally equipped for the no-holds
burred business he’s in.” He has
built Maricano up slowly and care
fully. Very carefully—the Rock’s
erly ‘opponents, Cohane points
00, were a combination of “pan
¢ie batter and the West Wind.”
Nevertheless, even Weill’s en
mmes quieted down some after
©OCKY's vietory over Rex Layne,
""10 had been touted as a pretty
£27d boy himself,
Focky’s immediate plans call for
'wo tune -up winter fights,
N Miami and Boston, a June bout
Clldoors and a September title
Sot at the winner of the Walcott-
Charleg return,
There is & distinet chance, of
fl”urse_. that from then on, all
focky's fights will be title fights.
