GOURMET SHOP OFFERS
RARE FOODS, PRICES
By CHARLES E. LYONS
AP Newsfeatures Writer
NEW YORK—If you'd like to go
on 2 gastronomic binge, or mayl_oe
just spruce up your diet a bit,
there’s a shop just off fashionable
Fifth Avenue that can supply al
most any food item you've ever
heard of and many you've seen
only in our dreams.
The shop has touches of the old
fashioned country store of grand
dad’s time, what with a potbellied
stove in one corner and a cracker
borrel and coffee grinder graecing
the scene. But this plaee, capi
t-lized at $200,000, is spotless,
furnished with lamps which look
o'd fashioned, and it has a terra
cotta Bristol blue and white color
scheme. Granddad’s stock in
trade was never like this—nor
were his prices.
If you want to do it up a la
M-:xico, you might try their fried
auave worms, a delicacy at better
cocktail parties below the berder.

you might surprise your spouse
with a roughage item like cactus
pieces for salads. This treat sells
for 39 cents apiece.
Caviar at $32 a Pound
Of course it goes without say
ing there is plenty of fresh caviar
around at $32.50 a pound.
For the rough-and-ready type,
boar meat (12 oz. for $2) from
France might be used to replace
steak on your menu. Such a
meal should be started with alliga
tor soup, another gourmet shop
delicacy. Your youngsters should
applaud rose petal jelly made
from the genuine article and a
special honey made by Canadian
Trappist monks.
The formidable array of succu
lent morsels found at the shop
comes from 23 countries. Gener
ally marmalades and biscuits come
from England, pates and game
birds and duck from France,
smorgashord from Sweden, cheese
from Holland, chocolate from
Switzerland, vegetables from Bel
gium and sardines from Norway.
Confection from Spain
From Spain comes a confection
known as torrone, while teas of
myriad taste and aroma arc se
cured from the Orient. Passion
fruit nectar and toasted coconut
chips are obtained from Austialia
and Hawaii respectively.
You don’t have to buy sight un
seen—or rather, untasted. They
have installed a “tasting room” on
the mezzanine where these strange
and exotic foods, mostly packaged
in tin and glass, can be tried be
fore ordering. Unhurried browsing
is invited. In the rear of the store
is a bar which serves nothing
stronger than onion soup.
The Gourmet Shop is operated
by Harry and Dorothy Davega
with Mrs. Nancy Ford, former ad
vertising executive, as a major
partner. They now plan so open
such gourmet shops in several U.
S. cities.
Electric lights should be wiped

VETS WARNED
AGAINST
NSLI LAPSE
All veterans of World War I and
World War II who now have
United States Government Life
Insurance or National Service
Life Insurance are reminded that
they should not permit this insur
ance to lapse under any circum
stances. Failure on the part of
insured veteran to make applica
tion for renewal of insurance up
on receipt of notices from the
Veterans Administration that the
term period has expired will au~
tomatically lapse and terminate
the existing insurance contract,
according to Raymond E. Lester,
manager, Athens Division Office,
State Department of Veterans
Service. o
Lester stated that nrany veter
ans are receiving notices from the
Veterans Administration that the
term period is expiring and
through carelessness or oversight
are neglecting to submit the ap
plication for renewal and the
proper premiums. In such instan
ces where the previous contract is
terminated, veterans will not be
permitted thereafter, under exist
ing law, to reinstate this insur
ance and therefore will lose all
right to any future U. S. G. L. L
or N. S. L. 1. coverage.
Lester further stated that the
Veterans Administration will no
tify the insured at least 90 days
in advance of the date of termi
nation and renewal. Upon receipt
of this notification, veterans
should then immediately submit
the application for renewal in ad
dition to paying all prenriums un
der the existing contract, up to
the date of termination, plus an
additional premium to cover at
least one month under the re
newal contract. Veterans' having
any questions pertaining to in
surance are invited to call at the
State Department of Veterans
Service Office, 283% East Broad
street, Athens, for assistance.
