What The
People Say
l February 15, 1952
| The Editor
| Athens Banner Herald
' Athens, Ga.
| Dear Sir:-
' The school fund controversy just
staged by the House and Senate
of the Georgia General Assembly
serves to point out the crying need
of consolidation of the Athens and
Clarke county school systems.
Many schools systems in Georgia
are too small and are backed by
tax digests too small to provide
adequate facilities for our white
children or to equalize the facili
ties of the colored schools with the
white schools.
Now is the time for the Athens
Board of Education and the Clarke
County Board of Education to
earnestly try to effect a consoli
dation of the school systems. Time
is precious as the Federal Courts
are grinding out decisions which
demand that the school facilities
be equalized and every citizen of
our community will find upon ex
amination that in spite of the aid
from the Minixmum Foundation
and the State School Building Au
thority, every economy ‘n opera
tion will be needed to provide good
schools for all our children,
I do not reflect upon the quality
of instruction in either the County
school or the City schools but I do
know that many of the schools
used by the city are old and are
not up to standard and that most
of the schools of the county system
have been judged by recognized
school authorities as unfit for use.
I believe that it is the duty of
every citizen and every civic group
to demand of the school guthorities
of both systems that they forget
petty differences and special inter
ests and both work together for the
common good. The Boards of Ed
uecation should call on expert
advise and sit down to a common
table to_work out the details with
qut delay.
The citizens of Athens and
Clarke County deserve good
schools and it is the duty of the
citizens of our community to see
that we have good schools.
Yours very truly,
Albert W. Wier, jr.

'WEEK END WITH FATHER’
IS TOP FAMILY COMEDY
A new kind of screem romance
is achieved in the Van Heflin, Pat
ricia Neal and Gigi Perreau star
rin& comedy, “Week End With
Father,” which open today at the
Palace Theatre.
With a supporting cast headed
by Virginia Field, Richard Den~
ning and Jimmy Hunt and includ
ing - three-score assorted young
sters, the film brings together a
widow with two young sons
and a widower with two small
daughters.
Despite the rambunctious inter
ference of their own progeny and
half a hundred other kids, a cli
matic love idyl is forged for the
widower and widow, played by
Heflin and Miss Neal with de
lightful adandon.
Producer Ted Richmond and
Director Douglas Skirk deserve a
lot of credit for the manner in
which they have put together this
laugh-feast-with- a-heart - throb.
It’s splendid entertainment and
the kind that appeals to virtually
all age brackets.
A further touch of the unusual
is added to the story of “Week
End With Father” by the fact
that instead of a triangle as is
customary in screen comedy
romances, this tale features a
quadrangle with Virginia Field
and Richard Denning providing
competition for Miss Neal and
Heflin in their quest for a happy
ending together.
Gigi Perreau and her sister
Janine, 9 and 7 years old, re
spectively, are Heflin’s daughters
and Jimmy Hunt and Tommy
Rettig, 11~year-olds, are Patricia’s
