Forest Fire Prediction Service
For Georaia Is Now Under Study
A forest fire prediction service
that tips off rangers ahead of time
on the likelihood of forest fires
may soon cover Georgia from one
end to the other.
The service-—set up as a re
search project of the University of
Georgia’s School of Forestry and
the State Commission of Forestry
—will base its fire prediction on
extensive weather studies.
At 20 points throughout Georgia,
and at 20 others to be added soon,
forestry weather stations are keep
ing tabs on temperature, rain
fall, wind velocity, and moisture
conditions of the fuel on the for
est floor. When these conditions
are right for a fire the forewarn
ed rangers will have time to get
together extra fire fighting crews
to prepare for an emergency.
* Georgia Research
The Georgia reséarch on the in- |
fluence of weather on forest fire “
outbreaks is being conducted bv |
Prof G. N. Bishop, professor of“
forest protection at the University. ]
Right now the study underway "
in Georgia is to determine exactly |
what weather = conditions spell |
danger of forest fire in this state. |
Days on which fires are likely to
occur are indexed by number, with
the higher numbers indicating the
greatest danger of fire.
This “class of fire day” system
was worked out by the Unites
wash worked out by the United |
States Forest Service and has been i
in use for some time in National
Forests and in a number of states,
partieularly in the East. Its ap
plication to Georgia conditions in
the object of the University’s re
search.
