_..AND IT COMES OUT HERE—This complicated array of tubes and other apparatus at Oak
Ridge, Tenn., Nationgl Laboratory, merely siphons off one of the by-products of the big atomic pile.
B. J. Massey is sealing off a tube of tritium, which has made its way through the man-made
“jungle.” This was one of the Oak Ridge operations shown to newspaper reporters and photogra
phers for the first time, as they watched how the atomic pile “cooks” and processes radicactive iso=
topes for medical and industrial uses, as well as for atomic bomb production,

Considerable fuss is being’ made
tr2se days in the financial marts
avout two projects, or maybe it's
a two-headed project. The brok=-
e z2oe boys would like to see more
“small investors” in the stock
market. And they would dearly
love to stimulate more interest on
the part of women in the buying
ard selling of stocks and bonds.
“"he motives behind all this are
€ v to understand. llt’s obvious
—now that the old-fashioned big
irvestor is getting to be a rara avis
~~that 100 small investors could
take his place. So now the guy
with a few hundred bucks and a
ven to share the business adven
tures of Consolidated Yo-yos Co.,
Inc.,, for better—not worse—now
is a fair-haired boy. By extension
of the premise, women are being
persuaded that investing is an at
tractive, sensible way to handle
money. Women, it seems, fre
quently inherit or are given
money, and increasing numbers
of them are making their own.
There are all sorts of signs of
this activity. Special courses for
women in investment are spring
ing up all over the place, and
women 2re being urged to attend
s 0 that they can ultimately amaze
their friends with their knowl
edge, let's say, of ‘“puts” and
“calls,” whatever they are.
Brokerage houses—in the old
days wmore dignified, cold and
haughty than private banking in
stitutions—are turning absolutely
gay, informal and hearty. Gone
are the somber furnishings, and
in have come colorful decors, |
titillating advertisements and a
buddy - atmosphere. Customer’s i
men are as engaging persona'ities |
as used-car salesmen. |
On the other end of the opera
tion are the corporations them
selves, now very conscious of their
stockholders as individuals. Just

“] WON'T SAY ANYTHING” —Gracie Fields, vivacious
Britigsh veteran of stage and screen, uses a hand to em
phasize a point as she and her radio repairman fiance,
Boris Alperovici, arrive in Rome from Capri. She said
she was “sick and tired” of speculation over their mar
riage plans and refused to say where they were going.
But now the speculation has ended. The two were
quietly married in St. Stephen’s cathedral at Cgpri in a
fifteen minute ceremony. “It was love at first sight,”
Gracie recalled.— (AP Wirephoto.)
dull things, almost completely in
comprehensible to any but the
initiated. They were mostly lists
of figures, in small type, broken
up by long paragraphs only a
lawer could unravel. Small ins
vestors by the hundred, I'll ven=

-Today, most annual reports
look like magazines, all fancied up
with colored pictures, gay little
graphs with cartoon figures, dol
lars cut up like pies, and verbal
descriptions of the company’s ac
tivities which a beginning high
school student could understand.
Thfi are also promoting like
mad the idea that stockholders in
a company are just a big happy
family. Annual meeting days are
the subject of invitations to stock
holders, and some of the com
panies niake a party out of it,
with a buffet luncheon served.
The other day.l had an occasion
to make a very “small investor’s”
interest in a company, and almost
by return mail I received a per
sonal letter, all full of cameraderie
and cousinly emotion from the
president himself welcoming me
into the fold. And it was followed
by reams of pretty literature, too.
Gave me a real glow to think how
flad they were to have such an
telligent, attractive, high-type
‘stockholder.
After all, the savings bank
never got so excited about my de=
posits, and it never had invited
me to a meeting complete with
free buffet. g
This is a nice start, but I think
there's still quite a way to go.
By reputation and neighborly talk,
most of us women have an idea
that stock-buying is a little daring.
1. also seems complicated, requir=
ing special, inside knowledge and
pretty concentrated attention to
the subject at hand.
If as many people as the brokers
think are potential investors—men
and women—why isn't the hand
ling of money the subject of high
school courses? After all, they
teach youngsters such things as
cooking, carpentry, basketball,
French, English literature, choral
singing and that stuff about John's

DEER-KILLING DOGS
VICTORIA, B. C. — (AP) —
Deer are faced with a new danger
—undisciplined domestic dags.
George Stevenson, provincial
game inspector, reported the dogs
are becoming more savage than
mountain lions during some sea
sons of the year. He said the Game
Department had to kill 12 dogs in
two weeks recently.

leave the deer to die.
When the snow s deep, they

them. “In very rare cases, the
dogs make a meal of the meat.”
