the call for the World Day of
Prayer that will be observed on
February 29, 1952. With the theme
of “Christ, Our Hope,” the 1962

help provide Christian literature

Athens Services
In this country World Day of
Prayer services are held in
churches both great and small,
and even in the open air, like
those some migrant chaplains have
held in the early morning for
pickers on their way to work. In
Athens the United Church Women
are sponsoring two services. The
first, to be held at the First Chris
tian Shurch at 11 o'clock on Fri
day, February 29; the second, a
children’s service to be held at the
First Methodist, Church at 3:30
o’clock on Friday afternoon. If you
are unable to attend a service,
won’t you join with Christians
around the world in a few mo
ments of silent prayer at noon on
the World Day of Prayer? The
chimes of the churches will call
you to prayer at noon:
This observance will mark the
twenty-sixth year of the World
Day of Prayer, although American
women of various denominations
have set aside a special day of
prayer for missions each year
since 1887. In 1920 the groups
joined with the womren of Canada
and chose the first Friday in Lent
as the day for united prayer
throughout North America. Mis
sionaries carried the idea overseds
in 1927, in response to requests
from many lands, the day was
first celebrated as a World Day of
Prayer. In this country, it is
sponsored by the United Church
Women, a general department of
the National Council of the
Churches of Christ in the U. S A.
Tonight at 10:05, over WGAU,
Mrs. Brunson Wallace, president
of the United Church Women of
Athens, will be interviewed. She
will give many facts of speical
interest ot Athens Christians. Be
) sure to tune in and hear this radio
message.

EAST ATHENS P. T. A,
An enjoyable evening was ex
perienced by all who attended the
annual birthday banquet of the
East Athens Elementary School’s
P. T. A. on Monday evening, Feb
ruary 18th, at 8:00.
The already beautiful auditori
um was most attractively deco
rated, and the atmosphere created
was conducive to listening to and
enjoying the most entertaining
program planned by the program
i committee and the delicious menu
served on this occasion.
The P. T. A. is presently look~
ing forward to two important
dates on its March calendar. The
first is a “Teacher Appreciation
Programme” planned by parents,
to be held on March 2nd, and the
second is “Dad’s Night” to be
held on the regular meeting night,
| the second Thursday in March.

In Indonesi
WASHINGTON, Feb. 24--(AP)
—The United States is in danger
of “logsing out” as some highly
placed diplomats put it, in Indone
sia— probably because it over
played its hand there.
This country has sought to per
suade the Indonesian government,
which acts friendly but talks neu
tral, to stand up and be counted
on the side of the Western Demo
cracies in the struggle against
Communism.
It has, according to the best
information available here, pressed
American aid upon Indonesia with
the best of intentions but in such
a way as to arouse the suspicions
of a newly independent people.
These moves are regarded here
as being at the root of the explo
sion in U. S. ~lndonesian relations
which occurred when Foreign
Minister Achmed Soebardjo re
signed after other cabinet members
and much of the Indonesian par
liament refused to back his first
step toward a military aid agree
ment with the United States.
Great importance is attached to
the incident because the Indone
sian Republic holds a highly
strategic position in the far east,
sitting atop Australia and astride
vital sea and air routes.
It is moreover about the richest
of the far eastern territories in
rubber, tin and oil. And it is a
country which has gained indep
endence from its former European
masters and at the same time put
down Communist forces which
quickly arose to seize power in the
