Swashbuckling Roles
By ERSKINE JOHNSON

HOLLYWOOD —(NEA)— Be
hind the Screen: It's a brave,
bold, swashbuckling Errol Flynn
on the high seas again in “Against
All Flags” just 16 years after he
captured Hollywood’s “bravest”
title in “Captain Blood.”
“But you know something,” he
said to me, “I wasn't even brave

Eroll also debunked the old
Hollywood legend that all of his
costume movies are boxoffice hits.
“That,” he told me, “is touching
on an exposéd nerve. The worst
movie I ever made was “The Ad
ventures of Captain Fabian. It
was a costume evnic and I was
never braver. I still can't under
stand what happened.”

Television row is howling about
a blonde glamor doll who was
ordered to turn her charms on a
prospective sponsor at a cocktail
parlor get-together following one
of her iz shows.
For two hours the glamor doll
played footsie with the gent sit
ting next to her and later beamed
to the show’s producer:
“T think we're all set. The guy's
mad about me.”
“Darling,” whispered the pro
ducer, “You made a big mistake.
You were playing up to the
WRONG guy.”
WILL JR. IS MODEST
WILL ROGERS, JR., who has
never acted before, is a wide
eved spectator every morning at
the rushes on “The Story of Will
Rogers,” in which he plays his
famous Dad. He told me:
“I can't afford the luxury of
supposing that I'm doing all right.
1 have to check up on myself. It's
prettY embarrassing and I find
myself squirming and thinking
‘do 1 really shake my head that
much? Do 1 really use all those
funny gestures?”

Ul producer Leonard Goldstein
is in the Academy award race
because of his successful movies,
but he's saying with tongue-in
cheek that an Oscar can ruin a
man’s whole life. As he sees it:
“To go to the Academy awards
you have to buy a texedo. Then
you have to buy a new car. Then
you have to meet a girl with an
evening gown. Then after you
have the tuxedo, the new car and
the girl with an evening gown, you
have to go around with a whole
new circle of friends. It's very
confusing.”

Hall Bartlett, who produced

year-old member of the Navajo
tribe who didn’t want t{o go to
school, showed the film plus a
shoot--em-up western, at the In

at Chinle, Ariz.
When the usual Indian massacre
started in the western film, Bart

yelling for the white men to win.
Later he asked one little boy
about it. The kid replied:
“We're not Indians — we're
Navajos!”

DIET EXPERIMENT
FOR CHILDREN
VANCOUVER, Wash. — (AP)—
The small fry should have lots of
fun at school soon, with dentists
starting to feed the rats again.
It's part of the Clark County
Dental Society’s “good teeth” pro
gram. The experiments will be
carried out in 10 elementary
schools, Dr. Raymond Campbell,
president, explained. They will
run for two months, during which
time pupils will weigh each gram
of food the rats eat and keep charts
on the results.
“It’s the best way we've found
to show children the value of a
well-balanced diet, as opposed to
one containing lots of sweets and
little or no milk,” Dr. Campbell
said.

AMERICAN TOUCH — U. S. autos and Siamese pedicabs in

BANGKOK—The face of this
fabled Eastern capital of canals
and porcelain temples, of smiles
and easy-paced living is changing
sharply. Something American has
been added.
American aid now is spread
over the very visage of the city.
Big American-style automobiles
jam the already clogged streets.
Americans fill chairs in night
clubs and restaurants. Midwest
accents dominate cocktail party
conversation,
The American Embassy now has
101 on its staff, in contrast to 30
only three years ago. In the past
year 79 members of the American
Special Technical and Economic
Mission (STEM) arrived.
Military Group Here
In the same 12 montAs 73 mem
bers of the U. S. Military Assist
ance Advisory Group took up
residence here. In addition there
are 13 Point Four representatives;
16 Fulbright Fellowship people.
The U. S. Information Service
(USIS) has expanded enpugh to
branch into two offices :fid a li
brary.
There are other Americans in
such United Nations groups here
as UNESCO, or ECAFE (Economic
Commission for Asia and the Far
East), the FAO ¢Food Advisory
Organization) or UNICEF (U. N.
International Children’s Emer
gency Fund).
Once every one in the foreign
colony knew each other. Now the

Reaction Against Newcomers
The general reaction of the old
time foreign resident here isn’t
hard to plumb. He doesn't like

ASK THE MAN WHO OWNS ONE
his chummy playground swarm
ing with newcomers. He has lived
here for almost nothing and was
proud to be treated by the hospi
table Thais as one o ftheir own.
All is changed now. House rents
have doubled and even trebled.
Servant costs have skyrocketed.
Everything for the foreign com
munity jumped in price.
Those who were here before the
influx of American aid blame the
officials who arrived with big
allowances for a “hardship post.”
Ask the average foreigner and
he’ll say he liked it better before
American aid furnished two gen
erators so the power wouldn’t fail
every few hors. He doesn’t care
whether the Chao Phraya River
bar has been removed by the
American dredge, Manhattan.
Thailanders Attitude
The oldtime Bangkok foreign
resident really can’t be persuaded
that the Thailanders will change
their old pattern—yielding with
the wind and waiting to come up
again once the storm has passed.
The Siamese, the oldtimers say,
want to be left alone to play their
own peculiar brand of politics.
Many American observers dis
pute the oldtimers. They say a
definite change for the better is
taking place in Thailand under
American aid, By helping Thai~
land attain stability and economie
prosperity, these observers be
lieve America is shoring up the
defense line against Communist
aggression.
Time will tell—but meantime,
the old Bangkok hand fears a
precious jewel is losing its lustre.
Sugar beet molasses can be
changed to yield up one of the
chemicals from which syntheic
rubber is made. The method uses
micro-organisms, tiny life forms.
These ferment the molasses,
changing its ehemical structure
like yeast ferments grain mashes
to give alcohol.
