temporarily Reduce Payments
ATLANTA, Ga—After a vet
e 2n has completed a six-month
period in a VA Hospital, his VA
compensation, pension or retired
pay may be reduced during the
remainder of his hospital stay,
William K. Barrett, director of the
State Department of Veterans
Service announced today.
A veteran who has dependents,
or receives less than S3O monthly
without dependents, will receive
no reduction® in payments. When
the payment is more than S3O a
month and the veteran has no de
pendents, the full payment will
be paid for six months but begin
ning with the 7th calendar month,
ihe award or payment will be re
duced 50 per cent but not less than
S3O a month.
This hospitalization includes VA
domicilliary or institutional care
and treatment in a private insti
tution at VA expense. Retired per
sonel are affected also if treated
under the Veterans Administra
tion.
The VA assumes that a veteran
is single and without dependents
when no evidence is furnished to
the contrary. If the veteran has
dzpendents, the VA allows him
60 days in which to obtain the
necessary evidence,
When a veteran, upon approval
or authorization of the responsi
ble medical officer, is discharged
from a hospital, he will receive the
full amount of the withheld pay
ments, unless he is held to be in
competent. Payment is then with
held by the VA until six-months
ofter a finding of competency.
Any veteran who leaves the hos
pital against medical advice
(AMA) or as a result of discipli=
pory action will not receive the
withheld portion for six-months.
It readmitted after leaving against
medical advice, the benefit reduc
tion will be effective from the date
eof readmittance,
When a veteran has died before
receipt of the withheld portion,
e'ther in the institution or after
«'scharge, the widow, widower,
children, parents, brothers or sis
ters may apply for it. If none is
living, the person who bore the
expense of the last sickness and
burial may apply for it. Claims
for reimbursement must be made
within § years after the veteran's
death or if the claimant is under
