Okinawa Is Readied For America’s
Strongest Cutpost In The Pacific
By DOUGLAS LARSEN
NEA Staff Correspondent
OKINAWA — (NEA) — This
vitally strategic island in the heart
of the Far East has a new name.
They are calling it America’s Gib
raltar of the Pacific. |
Tremendous construction and a
n ghty munitions stockpiling pro- |
gram is transforming Okinawa into
one of the nation’s strongest key
outposts. Up until now, this work
has been obscured by security re
strictions and the Korean War.
However, the full story of the
new strategic role which the
Joint Chiefs of Staff has_assigned
to the island—as a major bomb
ing base and prirge staging area
for -airborne and ground troops
—ean now be told here for the
firet time.
By the start of the Summer
there will be more than $200,-
000,000 worth of permanent con
siruction under way-——roads, bar
racks, typhoon - proof storage
areas, dock facilities and other
deiense projects. Athough the
major part of this work was be
gun only recently and has not yet
reached its peak, it is being
ruched through at the rate of
$2.000,000 worth per month.
This reporter last visited Oki
nawa in 1947, just after a dev
astating typhoon had made a
shambles out of what few ram
sh=ckle, rusting installations were
10ft over from World War 11. Liv
irg condiditions for the troops
stuck here were deplorable.
Swarmgs of Chinese Nationalist
troops-were futilely trying to sal
vage trucks and other equipment
from the huge, rusting stockpiles
which had been poured into the
island for the never-needed inva
sion of Japan. The material had
been given to the Nationalist gov
ernment for their last ditch de
fense against the Reds.
. ¥ *
The semi-tropical vegetation
was already beginning to cover
the shell craters of the invasion.
Much of the island was out of
bounds, because of the thousands

of land mines which had been
planted by the Japanese but
which hadn’t been removed.
Parctically nothing had been
done to rebuild the leveled vcities.
And only the first feeble attempts
to help the Okinawans out of their
pitiful plight had been started.
Since then, the change on Oki
nawa-—and on the other islandg in
the Ryukyu group—is amazing,
Modern shops sell the latest in
Stateside styles and gadgets. You
can buy most any make of brand
new car right off the salesroom
floor. Housing projects of mod
ern Califorina - type bungalows
dot the island. Construction of
new, native-type housing and
‘buildings in the villages is boom
ing.
Everywhere you look there is
a tremendous bustle of activity.
Busses loaded with Okinawans,
soldiers and U. S. civilians com
bine with trucks taxis and native
horse carts to jam the streets and
highways.
Almost everyone will tell you
that if one more giant bulldozer
is brought here the island will
sing beneath the sea. More than
2000 pieces of heavy construction
equipben are being operated
seven days a week, cutting giant
swaths through hills and moun
tains for roads, new housing areas
and bomb storage sites,

Modern office buildings are going

are being greatly explanded and
improved to provide close-in
