Ballerinas Get
Tax Reduced
TOKYO (AP) — Japan's ball
erinag did a most unhappy dance
when the .government. elamped a
100 per cent tax on all entertain
ment, : ¥ii
They got their point ever to the
parliament by toe dancing in cor
ridors, collaring influential law
makers, and cooing their argu
ment into flattered old ears.
The argument: the tax put them
in the same class with prosperous
strip-tease artists, While cus
tomers swallowed the tax and
flocked to the strip-teasers, they
were staying away from the bal
let in droves.
The parliament reacted by cut
ting the tax on the ballet to 40
per cent. Now Japan’s opera sing
ers are fit to be tied. The tax re
duction did not apply to them.
FISHERMEN'S CAR DUNKED
ST. LOUIS (AP) — A father
and son who went fishing recently
ended up by fishing their car out
gg Clearwater Lake at Piedmont,
0.
The empty car rolled into the
lake after its brakes gave way.
And it came in handy that Dan J.
Howard’s son, Harold, is a U. S.
Coast Guardsman. With the com
bination of a chain, a towetruck
and a motorboat, they finally drag
ged the car out. _
