SQUARE DANCING ‘y
REVIVAL IN WEST ’
ALBUQUERQUE—(AP)—Cow=
boys from Minnesota and cowgirls
fro mthe Bronx are taking up the
old Southwestern practice of do
si-dlo and promenade. Square
dancing is enjoyed in a new boom
with a strictly Western flavor.
Dozens of square dance club
with hundreds of members have
started in Albuquerque since the
government imported thousands
of workers and service men to the
Sandia Atomic Weapons Base and
Kirtland Air Force Base.
Square dancing as formerly |
done in the East was a slow dance
with a set pattern and grace to‘
burn. The man ramrodding a fast |
Western dance is as—on his own
&s a jazz musician. Keeping up a ‘
continuous line of patter, the |
Western caller fills in the music
with a commentary in thyme, on
lv a few words of which have any~- ‘
thing to do with directing the
dancing. |

0f America’s Blue Plate Luncheon |
By HAL BOYLE
NEW YORK — (AP) — What
keeps us Americans together?
Some say it is the unity of our
ancestors—the flaming spirit of
17176.
1 say that nothing has brought
us together more often—nothing
have we shared so many times—
as the blue plate luncheon.
If there is anything that has
knit America together, joined one
citizen to another, it is the blue
plate luncheon.
The hardier American seeks out
the blue plate luncheon. If he
doesn’t see it, he asks for it. If it
isn’t there today he goes to an
other place tomorrow.
Me? I'm different. I don’t look
for a blue plate luncheon. It looks,
for me. I'll lay you five-to-one

Sometimes 1 everl am left with
a residue I put in an envelope and
mall away to friends, (&' the
time they mafl it back, I have
gone on to another town.)
This blue plate luncheon—the
All-America cuunu-irn nightmare
—hag ambushed me Florida. It
has bushwhacked me in th!or
nia. It has crept up on my table
in Oklahoma. You can’t hide from
it in Jowa. It will follow you
around any restaurant in South
Dakota. In Alabama it will bounce
in your lap. Kansas has never
been able to outlaw it. In Penn
sylvania it is even sometimes mis
taken for food.
Occasionally, I have tried to
analyze the blue filate luncheon,
but that is a problem beyond the
grasp of one who only knows high
school chemistry.
So far as I have been able to
find out it is a piece of uodden}
protein, engulfed in gravy from |
which two mounds arise, one |
bearing a distant cousinship to
potato, the other having a vaguei
resemblance to another vegeta
ble, living or dead. l
But the entire sodden mass is a |
candidate for psychoanalysis il
not enjoyment.
