—well, hate is too strong. Antag
onism isn’t, though.
“Think you've got me, don't
wou?” It came harshly.
1 shrugged. Despite his earlier
attitude I'd figured this, essential
ly, for nothing but a friendly game:
His eyes narrowed. Then, very
slowly, he brought forth his wal
let. He pulled out S2O. ¥
“That says I'll halve the hole,”
he stated flatly.
He seemed to be getting overly
excited about nothing much. But
his tone was challenging and an
noying. I shrugged again. “Okay.
Your twenty’s covered. Go ahead
and shoot!” >
He surprised me further by get
ting down on his knees, but on the
other side of the hole from where
our balls lay. He studied the sit
uation for quite some time. You'd
have thought he was making a
survey of some kind.
I fidgeted surreptitiously. I felt
like saying, “Aaah. take the twen
ty bucks.”
%
He took them, allright. But he
took the putter first. Holding
it in his left hand so that the club
head was absolutely flat on the
grass, he extended it carefully—
the way you would if you were
trying to pull a chestnut out of the
paws of an aware and agile
monkey,
At least, with the head of the
club directly behind his own ball,
he gve a soft little foward perk
on the shaft. His ball, lifted by a
| touch of steel at its base, hopped
neatly over mine', . and into the

had been said about legitimacy.
He'd dropped the ball into the hole,
was all, and I'd dropped a double
sawbuci.
Very promptly I handed him 22
smackers. “Well, thanks,” I said.
“Give me a return match some
time.”
“Anytime.” He seemed fully
mollified, almost friendly.
But, for all that, he was a gam
bler, willing to double up the
stakes and a lot more, when the
chips were down. Neverthless, I
thought it might be an indication
of the way he might play in big
ger games.
And whoever had made two at
tempts on Marston Cravath, near
ly killed Dolly Dumont, and def
initely killed Ames Warburton,
was a gambler,

Directly after dinner Sally put
her arm through mine and led
me outside. But it wasn't a sweet
companionable gesture.
“Now listen,” she said, when
we'd gotten away from the house.
“You may have had a good excuse
last night, with all that business at
the oftice. But that’s over now. So
when are you going to do what
you said you would?”
I looked at her speculatively. I
did want to allow Harrison a cer

save a lot of unpleasantness all
around.
“Would you give me three more

CALLING ON DEATH-—Thomas Young, 34, arrived at Death’s door when a blowout rolled his car

asked you to help me make Uncle
Marney see reason you were, full
of brave words. You didn’t mind.
You wanted to. It wouldn’t throw
your ego out of whack or anything.
But now you're stalling. I don’t
like it. And”—she tossed the most
alluring head on Long Island—
“l'm beginning not to like you.”
Well, that I couldn’t have. I
got my arm loose, put a hand
under her chin and tilted it, so
that she had to look at me. “What,”
1 said tentatively, “would you say
if I told you that I know exactly
how Ames Warburton was killed?”
She stalled. “Do you?”
“I think so.”
“All right. How?”
“That isn’t answering my ques
tion.”
She waved, irritably. “If you're
trying to get me sore, Jim, you're
succeeding very well. But — oh,
I'll play along. You konw how,
you say. Do you know who?”
I shook my head. “Not exactly.
But I've got a favorite candidate.
And if I'm wrong on that partic
ular person, there’s others who
could have done it. Were physi
cally capable, I mean. It was a
physical job, Sally. A — well, a
long-range one, you could say.”

HARTFORD, Conn. —(AP)—
Travel note for you girls who are
taking the grand tour of Europe
this summer: have the answer
ready because the Continental
swains will pop the question.
Two West Hartford girls, Mil
dred Ann Cohen and Rhoda Mar
cus, turned down 10 proposals of
marriage. The proposals were in
six languages, but somehow the
gals got the “pitch.” Sometimes it
was by signs and gestures— one
tried thumping his manly chest.
But after all the flowers, per
fumes, tears and hand-kissing,
they said they preferred the frank
American approach “by a magni=
ficent margin.”
