Nimself that perhaps Chief Big
pear aid not have a gymnasium
qull of gangster and killers, or
even crazy Indians, thruisting for
scapls. But he still nourished fear.
This, he reasoned, was only hu
mar.
After all, George's work as a
letective had never, brought him
i'm) anything dangerous before.
Up to now, he had been hired only
to run down bad debts and way
\’,‘fi{'d hush _xflds.
George opened the door cau
tiously and peered inside at a ves
tibule. It was empty. G_runly, he
moved through the vestibule to a
second door, partitioned with glass
'nd with wire embedded in the
glass. Squinting through the wire
netting he looked into a large
empty room — a gymnasium. He
tried the door. It was unlecked
and he entered. 8
Inside, George walked slowly
past parallel bars and mechanical
horses. He stepped over wrestling
mats and ucked adrily under a
row of rings that were suspended
from the ceiling. Although the
gymnasium Was empty, some
where below, he tould hear the
murmur of voices chorusing and
laughing.
He crossed the gymhasium floor
and passed through another door
that led downstairs. The voices |
were louder now, and slowly he
pegan to descend. When he
reached the bottom of the stairs
he was confronted with still an
other door, and over the top of it
was a sign: LOCKER ROOM.
Here. in front of this door, the
voices were at their full height.
Chief Big Bear was probably in
side with some of his underworld
cronies, but it was now, or never,
and without further thought,
George Kendall grabbed hold of
the door knob.
A thousand screams racked his
brain, lingerie flew in every direc- ]
tion and the earth shook as
George opened the door. This was l
a woman’s locker room, whether
the sign said so, or not. His face 1
flushed, he slammed the door shut
and dashed up the stairs, Tho‘
screams followed after him, echo
ing through the gymnasium and
filling him with panies = = . ]

a man broke out of an office at
the far corner of the gymnasium
and started chasing. him. George
banged through-another door and:
stumblcd\ through the wvestibule.
He gave 'the outside door a hard
shove, and when it opened sud
don}y, he lost his balance and went
rolling and tumbling end-over-end
down the cement stair, never
stopping until he had reached the
botiom,
“Why do you do those things,
George?” came Verna Denton's
voice from the car.
“Secause I LIKE it” George
growled, picking himself up and
scrambling toward the car. Verna
flung the car door open,
$ ¢ %
A shouling man came out of
the building and started pound
ing down the stairs. George leaped
into the car, dragged himself
inside and, as he slammed the
door, Verna spun the car away
from the curb.
She gave the machine plenty of
gas, watching the rear view mir
ror, and headed away from Seneca
Springs. When she was certain
that they were not being followed
and George had caught his breath,
she turned and said, “Heap big
Indian have heap big tomahawk—
no? Give-um George heap big
have-ho, yes?”
“Shut up, will you.”
“Those are unkind wards,
George Kendall. Very unkind.”
She wheeled, the sedan into a
parking lot beside a small road
_side diner. “Offhand,” she said,
“I would say that Plan No. 1 was
a dismal flop, and as your friend
and advisor, might I suggest Plan
No. 21"
Will you be quiet for five min
utes?” Kendall said.
“Cheer up, Sherlock, At least
they didn’t get your scalp.” She
pinched his check. “C’mon, we'll
go inside and have some Seneca
Spring’s coffee and then you can
tell Momma vzhafi h:ippened."
She put a nickel in the juke box,
sugar in his coffee, even lit
him a cigdret. Then she asked,
“Now, what happened? What did
he say?”
“I didn’t see Chief Big Bear.”
“You didn’t see him?”
“I didn’t get a chance to.”
“Well, what happened?”
“T just opened a door I shouldn’t
have opened, that’s all.”
“Will you please make sense.”’
He gave it to her straight then,
each detail exactly as it had hap
pened. “How was I to know it was
a women’s gymnasium?”
“You mean Chief Big Bear was
training lady wrestlers?” .
“Don’t be funny. These babes
were big enough to be wrestlers,
but I'm sure they weren’t. It was
a ladies’ reducing class. Big Bear
is the answer to a fat girl's
prayer.”
She laughed heartily.
“I'm glad you think it's funny.”
“So what's next on the agenda,
Peeping Tom?”
“Well, I'm not going back to that
gymnasium, That’s for sure. Still
—> He paused. “I've got to see
that Indian medicine man and talk
to him.” - i
" “The phone book will probably
tell you where he lives.”
“I never thought of that.”
“And you call yourself a de
tective.”

MOSCOW HAS FILM TROUBLES
MOSCOW (AP) — The Moscow
film studio — which has recently
been under criticism—is coming
out with a new program of pic
tures.
“Unfortunately, last year the
studio did not cope with this task
and preparation of scenarios was
unsatisfactory,” says S. Kuzentsov,
director of the Moscow film studio.
“We were obliged to plan only
on the basis of one scenario to
each producer. And this led to un
completed scenarios being used for
film production, work having to
be continued on them during the
shooting of ten film, which had a
bad effect on regular release of
films,” he says.
