OPS Tightens
Potalo Prices
ATLANTA, May 29.—Continu
ing its fight to stabilize the potato
market and to ferret out and
eliminate inequities in the distri
bution of the short-supply food
itemy, the Office of Price Stabil
ization issued yesterday an
amendment to the potato ceiling
price regulation tightening provis
ions applying to country shippers,
James F. Hollingsworth, OPS dis
trict director in Atlanta, announ
ced.
The issusnce of the -current
amendment to the potato regula
tion follows an intensive drive in
the Atlanta OPS District against
over-ceiling sales and “black
market” dealing in potatoes. In
junctive actions against two
wholesale potato dealers were
filed in F2deral District Court in
Atlanta several days ago, and
since that time, Hollingsworth
said, enforcement agents of the
OPS have been observing markets
of this area closely, from 5 a. m.
to 9 a. m. and from 5 p. nv. to 8 p.
m., the hours during which out
of-state truckers usually arrive at
wholesale ' ‘outlets. He said that
other court actions may follow,
and that mare than a hundred in- |
dependent truckers, who appeared
to be non-willful violators, have
received warnings and have
promised cooperation. l
Numerous Complaints
Hollingsworth said OPS has re
ceived numerous complaints that
country shippers are increasingly
making delivered sales directly to
retailers great distances away and
taking the full 86 cents a hundred
pounds distributive markup be
tween the country shipper and the
retailer.,
This practice, said to be an out- l
growth of the present shortage,
ha# brought about an inequitable
distribution of potatoes, Hollings~
worth added, and has worked a
hardship on intermediate handlers
and many retailers. Sellers at re
tail who have been able to go di
rectly to country shippers for their
supplies have gotten more than
their sharc of available potatoes,l
while retailers who have had to
depend upon intermediate hand
lers for their supplies have, in
many cases, been unable to obtain
any.
Under the amendment to Ceiling
Price Regulation 113, effective to
day, country shippers will be lim
ited to & markup of six cents per
hundred pounds on carlot or
trucklot sales to retailers. This is
the markup permitted on ship-
Fers’ sales to intermediate hand
ers. The markup shipping point

Housewives Appeal
The new OPS order tightening
up the handling of scarce potatoes
at the producer level follows close
on the heels of an appeal by the
OPS to housewives, restaurants,
and other users of Irish potatoes
to curb their purehases by using
substitutes such as rice, grits, and
macaroni. ‘“ln this way,” Hol
lingsworth said, “by refusing to
buy potatoes at more than ceiling
prices, consumers will be helping
OPS to combat black market prac
