Jewish People To
Observe Shovuos
"hursday Night
The birthday of the world’s
atest book will be celebrated
1 when the Jewish people ob
* e Shovuos, a holiday honoring
"o ¢iving of the Torah on ancient
'.O Dt Sinai. Shovuos, which will
pasin Thursday evening May 29,
" .Ils the dramatic religious oc
"<on when Moses and the chil
‘wn of Israel received the Ten
( amandments and pledggd
emselves to obey them and live
py them. "
That pledge of long ago is re
ewed by Jewish youth nowadays
'n many a synagogue on Sho
‘ . they celebrate their confir
" .tion and declare their devotion
(1 their faith and to the Torah and
ite teachings. Boys and gu‘is_ are
o firmed after having learned the
oinciples of Judaism for'a num-
Lor of years in their religious
cchools.
'(qu(ucmding to the Commission
on Information about Judaism of
{he Union of American Hebrew
('mgrcgations and the Central
(onference of American Rabbis,
in honoring the Bible on Shovuos,
Jews pay tribute to the Book that
tands as the world’s eternal con
<cience, and that in every age has
been the source of the Jewish peo
ple’s life and thesp&rk .o‘ 'th_.lr
{4ith. Remembering the Bible's in
{lunce on all - their generations,
they reeall especially that in its
«pirit their ancient forefathers, the
|craelite farmers, would make pil
grimages to the Temple on Sho
vous to thank God for the newly
.athered harvest and to dedicate
o Him the first fruits of their
fields. ¥
The Book of Ruth is read in the
g.magogue on Shovuos. This Book
of the Bible well expresses the
«pirit of the holiday, for its scene
i« ancient Israel at harvest time,
.nd its heroine a girl who leaves
her idolatrous ways to pledge loy
41ty to Judaism and the Torah.
Some pious Jews will celebrate
{he holiday by spending Shovuos
nisht reading sections of each
Book of the Bible. Jewish house
wives will contribute to the heli
day air by serving tasty foods in
the spirit of an old saying that
“the Torgh is like milk and hon
ev.” Shovuos’ outstanding dish is
“ylintzes,” pancakes made of
cheese wrapped in paper-thin
dough.
Shovuos means “Weeks” and is
sometimes ecalled the Feast of
Weeks or Pentecost. It takes its
name from the faet that it falls
seven weeks after the great holi
day of Passover. Reform Jews,
who celebrate Shovuos one day,
vill eonclude the festival on May |
30, while Orthodox and Conserva
tive Jews, for whom Shovuos is a |
two-day holiday, will observe it
until the following evening. |
In Athens, a Shovuos service
will be conducted by Rabbi Sam
vel Glasner in the Temple of Con
gregation Children of Israel, Jack
on and Hancock Streets, at eight
o'clock Thursday evening. Rabbi
Glasner’s sermon will be on:
“God’s Law or Man’s?” A new
Jewish Faith Flag will be pre
ented by Mr. and Mrs. Dave
G wdgn. The public is welcome to
attend.
