| MUSK OXEN to be imported from Arctic.
fMusk (xen May Be Imporied From
ArcticTo Aid New England Soils
BY RAY BEARSE
AP Newsfeatures .
HUNTINGTON, Vt.—Some new
Englanders are looking to the
Arctie for aid in rebuilding the
thin-soiled rocky fields of their
abandoned farms.
Vilhjalmur =~ Stefannson, famed
explorer and - -author of “The
Friendly Acctic,” is the spark
plug ‘of the idea that the musk ox
can do the job. He hopes the
hardy Arctic animals can be kept
with less expense than other
breeds and thus make possible the
use of land otherwise unproduc
tive because of low fertility and
severe winters.
Outdoors in Winter
It is thought the musk ox can
live outdoo:s comfortably even
through the severe New England
winters and forage for its own
food. Thus expensive buildings
are not needed.
The major part of the work is
being undertaken by John J. Teal,
jr., anthrovologist and explorer,
Teal and Stefansson insist the
beast they are after is not & musk
ox. They say it should be called
ovibos. But when Teal flies north
next fall to capture eight calves in
Ellesmere Island, he will be after
the kind of animals which are
called musk oxen in dictionaries.
Long Negotiations .
Next fall’s trip will come after
five years of negotiation by Stef
ansson and W. Douglas Burden, a
Vermont farmer. The musk ox is
nearly extinet. Permission to cap
ture the eight calves was difficult
to obtain from the Canadian gov
ernment.
When and if a musk ox breeding
herd is set up on Teal’'s farm it
will become a project of the Ver
mont Animal Research Founda
tion.
They are sure the big animals
can be domesticated easily. The
reason they are almost extinet is
they have been slaughtered by
many peorles for their excellent
beef. Stefansson, who has lived
on them for long periods during
his many exploring expeditions,
‘says most people cannot tell ovi
bos beef from ordinary beef.
- Ovibos Produce Wool
; But ovihus produce wool as well
as beef. Tests made by Alfred F.
Barker, professor of textiles at
Leeds University, and by woolen
‘mills shows it is soft as cashmere,
‘Ste!ansson says. It has the wear
ing quality of fine sheep’s wool
and will not shrink when washed.
Barker believes that if it were
available in quantity it could
command prices higher than
sheep’s wool of the best grade.
Previous attempts to domesti
cate the ovibos have not been
made because explorers and scien
tist who knew the worth of the
animal did not have the money to
carry out tehir projects, the Ver
mont group says.

Atomic Bomb
Near Australia
By GORDON TAIT
AP Newsfeatures
SYDNEY, Australia — Britain's
first test of her atomic weapon
may be made at or near the bar
ren Monte Bello Islands off lonely
Northwest Australia.
The date of the test is as much
an official secret as the site, but
the popular guess here is Septem
ber.
There are several pointers
towards the group as the likely
site for the test, which Prime Min
ister Winston Churchill announced
would be held in Australia this
year, Among them are:
Two Royal Navy landing ships,
the Narvik and the Zeebrugge,
have headed north recently, car=
rying 100 engineers and equip
ment for the test frcm England.
An Australian water lighter and a
food lighter went with them.
There is no worthwhile fresh wa=-
ter at the Monte Bello Islands.
Ships Aid Preparations
An Australian boom ship has
been buoying channels approach
inging the Monte Bello Islands.
The Australian Navy minesweep
er Mildura is believed to have
been taking stores to the islands.
. The Depariment of Civil Avia
tion has issued regulations prohi
biting anyone from -carrying a
camera while flying over a large
area of western Australia.
Civil air line pilots have also
been advised that flying in this
area is restricted. Every plane in
this area must report its position
every 20 minutes, No charter
flights will be allowed over the
area without special permission.
During World War II there was
a big airstrip at Learmonth, popu
larly known to American airmen
as “Potshot.” This may still be in
fair order and would be conven
ient for the tests.
In Sub-Tropics
The Monte Bello Islands are in
the sub-tropics, and normally are
uninhabited. Before World War 11
Japanese pearlers used them as a
| base.
The island group covers 75
square miles, consists of three
main islands and hundreds of
islets. The main islands are Her
mite, Trimouille, and North-West.
Hermite is about 6 miles long
and 2 miles wide. It is rocky with
limestorie and coarse sandstone
formations. There are several
shallow lagoon-like bays which
dry out with the 18-foot rise and
fall in tides.
Sand Dunes
Trimouille island is chiefly sand
dunes, rock edges and sandstone
cliff faces. It is about 3 miles long
and less than a mile wide. On the
northern end of Trimouille is the
highest feature of the group—a
sand dune rising about 120 feet
above sea level. North-West Island
is 4 miles long and about half a
mile wide. Sand dunes form an
undulating ridge along the cen
ter.
Supplies of fresh water do not
exist in quantity. A small con
crete catchment on the side of a
hill apparently has supplied
water for the few who have stayed
on the islands. Bird life is scarce
in the group and, except for evi
dence of domestic cats and traces
of the common rat, there is no
animal life.

Psychiatric Treatment Proper
iln Some Cases Of Overweight
By EDWIN P. JORDAN, M. D.
Wiitten for Nl®, Service
This column is started with a
quotation from a rather extra
ordinary letter received from a
reader, She says: l
“I have always had troublel
keeping my weight down, and
lately have been taking pills that
help to kill the appetite. After
some time I consulted a doctor be
cause of some menstrual disturb
ances. He told me I was all right
and advised no treatment, but told
me I should consult a psychiatrist.
“Of coure, I refused, and felt
[downright insulted, so that I for
got to tell him that I had been
ltaking‘ the p@}}s. Do you think |
that these pills could dry up a
person’s blood?”
This is the kind of story which
irriates doctors no end. Here is
a reader who, without advice, took
drugs when she couldy,not know
whether they would v\nave any
harmful effects or not—though
whether they would “dry up a
person’s blood” is extremely
doubtful.
Then, when she went to the doc
tor who found mo physical condi
tion responsible, she did not tell
him the whole story and was in
sulted when he recommended that
she consult a phychiatrist. |
It is quite well known that many |
persons suffering from everweight ‘

I People who are trying to lose

Also, many people say that they

they mean is that they eat a small
