Cost of the hull-an-hour “rail
road” was sls million in 1950,
estimates Wean. Since then the
price tag has risen 30 per cent,
but five or six of these monsters
could put our entire armored
vehicle program on a war-time
footing. L RS
““Through the entire line has

of it are in operation. The Mas
sey-Harris plant in Racine, Wis.,

The firm still produces its regu
lar line of specially - designed
steel. mill processing equipment
o a 50-50 production basis with
defence items — including a pro
ject for the Atomic Energy Com
misgion,
At the same time Wean keeps
striving towards its goal — *“the
automatic factory.”
Wean‘s team of almost 50 en
gineers and 200 skilled machinists
and assemblers is ready to start
the 12-month job of preducing the
long “trans-car” line, but as with
mahy other things, the issue of
war or pearce will be a deciding
faclor.
From the 1300-foot line, only
a few of the tools could be read
ily assimilated into a peace-time
factory. But as youthful presi
dent Wean says,” “It's comforting
to know that we have it.”
Gl's Dependency
In order to qualify for a depend
ency allowance, which provides a
substantial increase in a service
man’s pay, a parent must be more
than 50 percent dependent upen
the son, Raymond E. Lester, Man
ager, Athens Office of State De
partment of Veterans Service an=
nounces. :
Lester stated that a dependency
need not actually exist when the
serviceman enters the Armed For
ces—it may arise at-any time after
entry into service. . :
In determining whether more
than 50 percent dependency exists,
the merits of each individual case
are minutely examined.
For example, a serviceman's
father may die many months after
the son enters service. Until that
time, the son may not have been
contributing any. money to his
mother's support. The. father
leaves his widew only partially |
provided for and there is need of
financial support’ on ‘the part of |
the son. ke
A fine point immediately. arises
as to whether the widow will re
‘ceiye half her support from funds |
‘thus left by her late husband, or |
whether the son wil;,})need to con- |
‘tribnite more than -50 percent to |
“Jipy s@phort. v T T
In such a case the pay office
must determine the mother’s re
congnized standard of living, and
whether or not her available sup
port is sufficient to cover half or
mote of her normal expenses.
Thus, the fact that the service
man’s father dies does not automa
tically entitle the son to claim his
mother as a dependent for family
allotment purposes.
Each case must be decided upon
the evidence. Again, the pay of
fice may make such a determina
tion. ‘
There is no specified period of
time during which dependency
needs to arise in order to qualify
one for the dependency allotment.
But as soon as dependency of more '
than 50 percent does exist, the
serviceman file application on be- \
half of his dependent. ‘
Payment is not effective until |
after the pay office approves the |
application. Athens Office of the

Service for advice and assistance.

Spastic Intestinal Disorder Is e
Worsened By Worry, Fatigue
By EDWIN P. JORDAN, M.D.
Written for NEA Service
Astonishingly large numbers of
people suffer from vague discom
fort and pains in the abdomen.
When this is accompanied by al
{ernating periods of diarrhea and
constipation, the condition is like
ly to be what is known as spastic
colon, or irritable bowel.
Apparently this disorder is more
common in modern civilization
than it used to be and is tied up
closely with the tense pace and
nervous strain of city living,
Whether it is purely of nervous
origin or not no one knows for
certain. It does not lead to serious
disease and is always made worse
by emotional upsets or dietary in
discretion.
The pain and discomfort may be
felt all over the abdomen or just
in some sections, most commonly
in the lower portion. All too often
the symptoms go on for years
with periods of partial recovery
and then a worsening. Attacks’
may persist for anywhere from a
few minutes to several months.
When pain is present; it is grip
ing and crampy in nature. People

Unfortunately many people who
