Upward Trend

In Food Prices
Current tabulations of prices
for fifty basic commodities of all
varieties in twenty-nine retail
food stories in Athens shows an
average price increase of 1.1 per
cent during the period from April
15th to May 24th. The leading
factor in this upward trend was
the price of beef and veal which
showed an average increase of 5.3
per cent. Other leading classifica
tions and the average rate of
price increase for each were pork
(2.6 per cent), cereal and bakery
products (2.2 per cent), and fats
and oils (3.0 per cent).
Items showing a downward
trend were fruits and vegetables
(-5.9 per cent), dairy products
(6.0 per cent), and fish (13.6 per
cent). Products remaining steady
as to price level during the period
included sugar, beverages, eggs,
chicken, and lamb.

That the South will probably
“walk out” for the Democratic
National Convention over the “ci
vil rights” issue is the prediction
of former Senator Claude Pepper
of Florida in the lead article .of
the summer Georgia Review which
is just off the press.
Writing in the quarterly literary
publication of the University of
Georgia, Senator Pepper says that
the 11 states of the Deep South
are backing Senator Russell much
more solidly than the Dixicrats
backed their candidate in 1948.
Pepper adds that the South has
nothing to gain and much to lose
by splitting the Democratic Party
over an issue which “politicians
who want to make capital out of
race prejudice” have made to
mean to the average Southerner
the destruction of segregation.
