older woman who can find amus
ing pastimes, who can fill her life
with things she enjoys doing, has
a right to be proud of herself.
She isn't sittlnl, around feeling
sorry for herself and therefore
wasting her life,
As long as she is finding en
joyment, she is doing something
worthwhile.
If her years of hard work are
behind her—and there is no longer
anyone dependent of her—she has
earned the right to spend her time
in any way that makes her happy.
ACTIVE WOMAN NOT A ‘
BURDEN TO HER CHILDREN
And there is another thing to
her credit. If, on her own, she can
make friends she enjoys being
with, can do something besides
sit around feeling lonely and sorry
for herself, she is not a burden
to her children.
It's the older woman who re
fuses to do anything, who tries to
live entirely through her children,
who makes her children feel some
how responsible for her lonely life,
who is a bruden.
The 6lder woman with enough
get-up-and-go to work out a sch
eme of living that is pleasant des
erves respect, not condemnation.
Any way she spends her time is
all right, so long as she gets plea
sure from her activities.
Enjoying time it NOT wasting
time. Wasting time is sitting a
round being lonely and miserable.
Anything an older woman can
do to get some enjoyment into her

HOLLYWOOD, (AP) — “Where
do they get all that stuff?” asked
Shelley Winters.
She was referring to the rumor
mongers who have reported that
she and bridegroom Vittorio Gass~
man were fighting. She continued:
“That’s a lot of baloney. Vittorio
and I get along great. We have
differences of opinion, but our
basic ideas are the same. Besides,
we never fight.”
“We discuss,” remarked Gass
man, a fellow of few and well
chosen words.
I had gone to lunch with Gass
man to discuss Art and such mat
ters. But Mrs. Gassman dropped
in to break bread with us and
somehow the subject got into de
mestic matters.
“After we went to Mexico,
somebody printed that we were
breaking up,” said non-stop Shel
ly. “Now how can they do that
‘Why, we only had one big argu
ment, and that was over Vittorio's
driving. He's a very good driver,
but European style. He'll drive 80
miles an hour a few feet behind
another car. I didn't go for that,
and I told him so.”
“Our only major difference,” re
marked the Italian, “is in philoso
phy of acting. Shelley, like most
American actors, believes in the
realistic kind of acting. I have been |
schooled in the classical stage, |
and I believe in a more stylized
kind of acting.”
Gassman is playing in his second
U. S. film.
