teen-agers who have turned “book
shop proprietors” are Charles
Bell and Burke Hodgson and their
area of activity is Crane's Olde
Booke Shop on Jackson street.
Mrs. William Crane, wife of the
University Alumni secretary, is
away for the summer and the two
former Athens High School stu
dents have taken over the man
agement of the shop untii time to
enter the University in the fall.
Surprisingly enough the book
store operators are planning sci
entific study at the Universit)‘
rather than literary courses.
While visiting the book shop
which is “chock-full of unusual
objects and rare old books, the
browser will be told by either one
of the two young men “we're li
able to find anything on the
shelves if we look long enough.”
Rare Objects
That claim, voiced with no lit
tle pride, will be substantiated by
a gew minutes perusal of® the
crowded shelves in question. While
books are the stock-in-trade, oth
er objects of more than passing
interest will be found. Shells, old
bullets, un-mated cuff links, an
old brooch, a nut-cracker, and
miscellaneous coins are just a few
of the items found in isolated
crannies of the place.
In the way of books, there are
few people who could resist an
hour or so of uninterrupted brows
ing through the shelf-lined shop.
Proof readers of 1890 obviously
were not always on the alert, as
one of the books at Crane’s Book
Shop has several pages devoted
entirely to “Errata”. In concise
manner the editor tells the reader
THE BANNER-HERALD. ATHENS, GEORGIA
that on page 63, line 40 the word
“former” should read “latter.”
Maybe the author just changed his
mind.
A charming old leather-bound
family album replete with quaint
family portraits, is filled with pa
pers dating back to the 1880 era.
Included in the papers tucked
away in the album is a programme
for a “vocal concert” at Cornell,
Another paper is the election slate
for the same Institution, printed
for the convenience of the stu
dents In 1884. Although musty
with age, the album is pleasing to
the eye with its flower-covered
leather and bronze clasp.
The album is inscribed, “Nellie
from Mother . ~ Christmes, 1881,”
and most of the photographs were
made in Ithica, N. Y,
Collector’s Item
The year 1807 marked the pub
lication of the second edition of
“The Botanic Garden” and a copy
of that old work is among the
collector’s items at Cranes. The
full title of the book is “The Bo
tanic Garden, Comaw the

losophical Notes.” Published by
the printers of the physics faculty
of Columbia College, the book is
a rare volume indeed and is dotted
freely with poetic quotations and
profound theorization on Dr. Dar
win’s evolutionary reports.
On display in the window of the
shop, at present, is the original
score of some religious music,
written in 1551.
Other books, found by spotting
interesting looking covers, include
a cheerful little book called “Great
Disasters and Horrors In the
World’s History.” Complete with
numerous sub-titles, the book de
clares that the reader will find
within its covers a “graphic ac
count of the notable calamities
which have befallen mankind in
all ages, both upon land and sea.”
The reader making this pur
chase is further assured that he
will be told of “noble responses of
aid with an additional account of
methods of prediction.”
The book is illustrated, too, with
the pictures keeping completely in
character with the depressive
character of the subject matter.
This volume was published in
1890, e
Lew Wallace, author of “Ben
Hur,” combined talents with Will
Carleton and John Clark Ridpath
to publish a collection of famous
world pictures in 1894. The col-
Jection, printed in black and
white, is augmented with editorial
comment,
Athens Commentary
Athens, the home of the Uni
versity, was fi(\;:n considerable
comment in a k published by
University Press in the early 30’s.
The book, which is among the
thousands on the shelves at
Cranes, informs the reader that
Athens boasts of “six hotels, five
tourist homes, and a tourist camp
and affords bus transportation for
five. cents and taxi rides for a
dime.”
“Them days are gone forever,”
but they can be read about in the
book which is entitled, “Georgia,
ai guide to its towns and country~
side.”
”Xi\other book on the architec
tural subject, published in 1871, is
called “City Homes, Country
Houses, and Church Architecture
of the American Builders Jour
nal.” Ilustrations of notable
homes and churches of the United
States are included In the book,
as are handy Mttle tips for sim
