DOGS % mk-
WANT to start an argument
among your dog-owning friends?
Then do as we did recently when
we asked a number of dog fanciers
how many breeds of dogs origi
nated in the United States.
How many would you say—lo,
20, 650? Actually of the 111 pedi
greed breeds registered by the
American Kennel Club only four
are recorded as being native to this
country, (Don’t feel bad—we didn’t
know either until we checked with
the AKC.)
Three of the dogs, the Chesa
peake Bay Retriever, the American
Water Spaniel and the American
Foxhound, are in the sporting
classes while the fourth, the Bos
ton Terrier, is grouped with the
non-sporting dogs,
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever
owes its existence as a“separate
breed to a shipwreck. In 1807 an
English brig was wrecked off the
coast of Maryland and its crew
and two Newfoundland puppies
were rescued by American sailors.
Upon landing the British seaman
presented the dogs to several kind
inhabitants who befriended them,
These dogs soon earned fame for
their ability as retrievers and it is
generally believed that the Chesa
peake Bay Breed was introduced
when they were bred to either the
flat or curly-haired retrievers im
ported from Europe. By 1885 a def
inite type of dog was developed
and the breed soon became famous
throughout the world for their
feats in the rough waters of Chesa
peake Bay where they often re
trieved as many as 300 ducks a day.
Just where in the United States

Native Breeds
the American Water Spaniel orig
inated is not exactly known. The
American Water Spaniel Club re
ports that the breed, which was
recognized by the American Ken
nel Club in 1940, hag been known
in New England for decades but
that the present-day specimen at
tained its greatest development in
the mid-west, Records from that
section of the country disclose that
they have been breeding true to
type for many generations. Prior
to 1940 the American Water Span
iel was used primarily as a work
ing gun dog, but since that time it
‘has been appearing in the show
‘rings with great frequency.
- The American Foxhound, who
‘can trace his ancestors as far back
as De Soto's conquest, has been
developed most extensively in the
southeast. One of the best known
of the various strains {s the “Mau
pin dog” or Walker Hound which
was first bred around 1857,
The Boston Terrier resulted pri
marily from a cross between the
English Bulldog and the ‘white
Englisk Terrier. It is generally
conceded that Robert C. Hooper
originated the breed in Boston
some sixty years ago when he
mated his dog Judge, a cross be
tween an English Bulldog and a
white English Terrier, to Gyp, a
pure-bred English Terrier.
Incidentally, the Boston Terrier,
first recognized as a separate breed
by the American Kennel Club in
1893, is the only terrier not classi
fied as such by the AKC. Instead
it is grouped with the non-sporting
dogs.
