WOMEN DRIVERS OUTSMART HEN
WITH AIM OF FEMININE WILES
| By ANNETTE GREEN
| NEA Staff Writer
Women are taking to the open
roads this summer, and men,
as usual, are holding their heads
. and predicting the outcome will
be nothing short of “grim.”
If you belong in the category of
“lemale traveler,” there’s only one
way to uphold your dignity and
reputation as a woman who knows
where she is going and in what.
As soon as you have decided on
a destination, have a chat with
your garageman. Make it casual.
Don’t let him know you are really
depending upon his advice. Let
him think you “are holding a
friendly discussion.
Ask him in the course of pleas
antries to cheek the wheels for
balance. If he has nothing else to
do, he might even take a minute
to rotate the tireg and examine
them for cuts; blisters and danger
ous tread and sidewall wear. Don‘t
make your request obvious, how
ever. A hint or two should do it. |
Next, lean against the radiator
with some off-hand comment
about leaks and possible stoppages
in engine water jackets. After
that's taken care, of suavely slip
behind the wheel and start pump
ir~ at the brakes.
Zmile sweetly, and remark
about adequate fluid and brake
linning. After all, there will be
time on the road, won't there,
when you might want to stop?
Throwing out a plank could serve
the same purpose as brakes, but,
it would be so inconvenient to
carry.
if you are lucky, it will be rain- }
ing the day you visit the garage.
Then it won’'t seen odd that your
windshield wipers are madly beat
ing back and forth. After sug
gesting that he look to see if the
wipers are sweeping clean, you
might flash your headlights on
nine or 10 times with the implica- ‘
tion that you suspect potential
short-circuits. i
As you are pulling away from
the station, call back a word or
two about checking adjustments
on the carburetor and choke, as
"well as mentioning that he exam- |
ine the fuel pump for wear.
Your final words might be about
checking the timing of the igni
tion, distributor points, coil, con
- denser and ingintion clabes. The
| spark plugs might be adjusted or
+ replaced, too. Whatever you do,
thought, remember to be offhand.
Once you and the garageman
have “talked” your car into per
fect condition, drop the guise and
get on with your travels.
If you are an explorer by nature
~— resist temptation. You'll be
: much safer sticking with known
" roads. If somehow you find your
toelt'boued down in a mud pud
. dle in the middle of a deserted
. country la‘n& don’t tramp on the
| gas pedal and expect to sail blithe
1y through. :
More likely, you'll go into a side
spin and reafiy bog down. Shift
into first or second gear instead,
and move slowly but steadily. To |
lto&hil to sink.

sticks or stones under those rear

Scatter the track ahead with more

It may not be the most glamorous

Better play safe and assemble a

You may not know how to use all

In addition to your car’s regular

gasoline can tow rope, squirt oil

Grady Students
Get Internships
This summer 18 students in the
University of Georgia’s Henry W.
Grady School of Journalism are
getting practical experience with
leading newspapers, radio sta
tions, advertising departments,
and public relations offices, in
connection with the School’s in
ternship program, according to
Dean John E. Drewry.
“Twenty years ago in (1931),
the Grady School pioneered with
internships in journalism, an ad
aptation of a long-established
medical practice,” Dean Drewry
explained. “Under this arrange- |
ment, our better students are
placed with newspapers, radio
stations, advertising departments,
and other phases of journalism,
for a quarter of practical exper
ience, over and above that which
is part of their resident journa-l
lism classes, These internships are |
usually arranged for the vacation
period between the junior and
senior years, but during the 1949-
50 session, the plan was modified
whereby students could be awayl
for internships «&her quarters. |
Thus, the way was paved for a
further development of the ‘co-op’
plan of study.”
This summer, the following 19
students are getting practical
experience as indicated: Juanita

News From The
Veteran Corner
Here are authoritative answers
from the Veterans Administration
to four questions of interest to
former servicemen:
Q. I am a World War I veteran
drawing Civil Service Retirement
pay. Must I include this money in
figuring out whether my total
yearly income is below the ceiling
for getting a pension for a total
nonservice-connected disability?
A. Civil Service retirement pay
ments count as income only until
you have received the full amount
you have contributed under the
program. After that, the retire
ment payments are not considered,
in computing income for pension
purposes.
Q. Are there any cases in which
a GI loan guarantee can be re
stored to a veteran’s credit?
A. Yes, under the following con
ditions: If the property is destroy
ed by fire or other natural haz
ard; if it has been taken over for
public use by the federal or local
government, or if it must be dis
posed of because of other com
pelling reasons such as change of
employment or illness, not the
fault of the veteran. VA, how
ever, must be free from liability on
the original loan.

GI Bill, and I had to interrupt my
training to enter a hospital. I ex-

“Brandon. do you know your lines
for the next scene?”
“I don’t know and I don’t care.”
And with that, Brandon de
Wilde, nine-year-old Broadway
star, hopped on a bicycle and sped
away from the movie set. But he
soon returned and went through
a flawless rehearsal for the film
version of “Member of the Wedd
ing.” He is starring with the two
performers who appeared with
him in the play-—Julie Harris and
Ethel Waters.
Exasperates Father
This sort of caper is exasperat
ing to the boy actor’s father, Fred
eric deWilde, who shares with his
wife the responsibility of keeping
Brandon in hand during working
hours.
“He leads us a merry chase,”
admitted the father, himself an
actor and stage manager. “But

Brandon is no more trouble than
any boy his age. It's an age when
they like to raise a little cin.”
DeWilde told me about their
unique family life. All three are in
show business, and so far the
whole family has managed to
work in Brandon's plays.
“When he's in a show, Brandon
gets to bed at midnight,” DeWilde
rremarked. “He rises at 11, so he
has a normal amount of sleep. He
spends an hour with a tutor to
make up the school he has missed
in the morning. Then he goes to
regular school in the afternoon.
“He lras his afternoon play, like
any childo. We have dinner and
then leave our Long Island home
at seven and drive to the theater.”
Brandon is a unique star in that
his career as a boy actor has only
three years to go.
“He’ll quit when he’s 12", his
father said with finality. “By that
time, he’ll thave enough in the
bank to see him through prep
school, college and a few years af
terwards. If he wants to be an ac

him. But he’s not going to be able
