TIRMINCHAM, Ala. — A mini
mum age of 18 yvears for work oh
power-driven bakery machines
will go into effect July 21 under a
now federel arder issued by Secre
tsry of Labor Maurice J. Tobin,
a-cording to announcement by
Homer E. Krog of Birmingham,
Pesion IV Director, Wage and
Hour and Publiec Contracts Divi
sions, U. 8. Department of Labor.
Krog said the order was issued
p Secretary Tobin under auth
ority conferred by the Fair Labor
<tandards Act (Wage-Hour Law)
to prohibit the employment of 16-
and 17-vear old minors in occpa
tions he finds particularly hazard
ous for youngsters. In general,
minimum age for employment
uner the Act is 16 years.
Zrog said that while the bakery
in lustry as a whole does not have
a high accident rate in compari
son with all manufacturing indus
tr os, accidents on bakery mach
ines *are more likely to cause
serious injury. Not only permanent
mo.ming but death has resulted
when young people were hurt
while employved on dangerous bak
erv machines.”
"obs prohibited by the new
order = Hazardous Occupations
Ovder No. 11 — include operating,
or assisting to operate, or cleaning
the following machines: dough and
pbatter mixes; bread dividing,
rounding or molding machines;
dough brakes and sheeters; com
bination bread slicing and wrap
ing machines; and cake cutting
fi.nd saws. Also prohibited is the
o~cupation of setting up or adjust
inz cooky or cracker machines.
Krog indicated the new orders
does not relieve an employer from
the obligation to comply with
other Federal, State, or municipal
laws that set a higher standard.
Representatives of employers, or
ganized labor, and the general
public presented their view of
Tobin’s proposed order at a public
hearing - last February. Their
views, in-general, supported Sec
retary Tobin’s proposal, which was
based on investigation by the De
partment’s Bureau of Labor Stan
dards of the hazards of machin
5€Y operations in the baking in
ldustr;.'.
