THE STORY: Jack Duggan, a
private detective, borrows Dr.
gasil Willing’s name and dies. On
{he same night aged and blind
yiiss Katherine Shaw, who was to
mest Duggan at the home of Dr,
Zimmer, & peychiatrist, also dies,
prinsley, nephew of Miss Shaw,
and Charlotte Dean, her secretary,
connot shed light on the aged
woman's death or her connection
w!'h Duggan. In pursult of clues,
1l goes to the country club
where the suspects seem to con
gregate. There he talks to Bert
Canning, who with his wife Isol
al, were at Zimmer's place the
night Dugesn was poisoned.
Xlv
gert Cenning snipoed off the
o 4 of a cigar and lighted it. “I
/dn't pey attention to you at
7immer's that evening, I had no
ilca that you were Basil Willing
and 1 had no idea that anybody
was going to be murdered.” Can
ping drew on his cigar. “Do you
lice working with the district at
torney’s office?”
“yes, or 1 wouldn’t do it, Do
vou like politics?”
“«I'm rot in polities.” Canning's
floe was exnressionless as his
srice. “I've never been able to
onderstand why men in their
mses become candidates for: of
fica ®
‘Perhaps they like power.”
“Power?” Canning came as near
i, smiling as he ever did—a mere
nairting of the lips with a sour
Iwist at one corner. ‘lt’s not they
ho have power. It’s the men be
hind the scenes who get. them
elected.”
“And you are one of those?”
“I'm not admitting anything.”
~he stolid eves shifted to Basil
iin, “But that’s what 1 would
he—if T wanted power.”
“1 was wondering if a man like
ywu would kill for the sake of
Canning laughed harshly. “Mur
dorers differ in detail. They kill
r money or lust, fear or revenge.
All sorts of things. But, essential
|y, they're all relieving tension,
All sceking peace of mind.”
How can a man have peace of
mind oncehe’s killed?”
Once more Canning laughed.
“A strong man doesn’t feel re
wrse and an intelligent man
esn't get caught.”
“Then you believe that a strong,
intelligent man who had enough
money to buy all the obvious
safeguards could kill without be
ing caught?”
Canning was surprised. “There
e mighty few things, Dr. Will
ing, that intelligence plus money
cannot do in the modern world.”
Canning twirled his glass, then
took a sip. “Have you ever
thought vou might like to be
kealth commissioner?”
- * *
Basil was startled. Then he re
membered the double brandies.
“That’s a dull administrative
job,” said Basi] lightly.
In the ballroom, music died.
There wag an influx of talk and
laughter as dancers sauntered
back to their tables in the bar.
Canning turned incurious eyes on
them. “Why don’t you all come
back to my place and finish the
evening there?”
Basil was a little surprised to
find that “you all” included
Brinsley Shaw as well as his own
party. Cypress and rhododendron
tlanked the flat-roofed house that
stood squarely on the crest of a
hill. Canning unlocked a side
door, and showed his guests a
long, low-ceiled room, gaudy as a
Christmas package. There was a
billiard table and while the others
played and Canning was at the
bar, Basil found himself beside
Isolda on a green leather sofa.
_Sitting beside her, he had his
first good look at her face, Under
a distorting, almost Egyptian
mask of eyeshadow, mascara and
lipstick, it was naive as'a peasant
girl's— wide-spaced eyes, short
nose, full lips and high cheek
oones,
“We're drinking too much, Bert
and I. It doesn’'t bother him. But
It worries me because it’s begin
ning to make me fat. And I can’t
stop. That was the first reason I
went to Dr. Zimmer.” She caught
her breath and paused. “Please
don't tell Bert I'm a patient of
Zimmer’s. He thinks Zimmer is
Just a friend of mine. I never
meant to tell you but liquor
makes you indiscreet.”
"Has Zimmer helped you?”

hol supplies all the energy I need
so the food I eat is all stored up
in my body as fat. But it's hard
to live with Bert and not drink.”
“What was your other reason for
visiting Dr. Zimmer?” queried
Basil. “You said that drinking was
only the first reason.”
A look of fuzzy calculation
came into her eyes. “I don’t know
what I said. What I need is an
other“drink.” She rose laboriously
and walked with precarious
steadiness toward the bar.
After a few minutes he crossed
the room to the only door that led
to the rest of the house, hoping
there were no stairs or other boo~
by traps for her unsteady feet,
Isolda had seemed near collapse,
He found stairs and descended
in darkness, Evidently. the house
was built aaginst the side of a
hill. with the game room on the
upper level, At the bottom he
groped for a switch and found
one. Light blazed.
The room was empty. Some
quality in its stillness disturbed
Basil. He stood looking about him.
It was what a modern architect
calls the “living-dining area.” In
side there were no partitions that
reached the ceiling. There were
merely built-in cupboards, or,
rather, storage spaces.” No won
der Canning and Isolda were a
little tired of each other, Perpe
tual intimacy was forced inex
orably upon the inhabitants of the
house.
All he heard as he stood there
was the moan of a hoot owl just
outside, “Room” was not the right
term for this vast space. Every
outside wall was a huge plate
glass window,
Then Basil heard something—
as if a heavy object had fallen to
the floor.

The sheepman explained that a

A Navy blimp, airplanes and

Veteran yachtsmen in sea-going

the small boat, drawing only six

Home-Made Sail
Roberts said they made a sail
with a bottom Plank and a piece of
canvas. The wind blew them back
north into marshes and they hud

morning the wind carried them
south and into the creek.
The two men waded barefoot
