SCREEN ENAMEL
A newly developed screen en
amel gives weather and rustproof
proteetion to all types of screens
without clogging the wire mesh,
say manufacturers,
Before screens and frames are
painted elean and dry them. All
dust and oily accumulations
should be scrubbed away. Sand
paper or & wire brush should be
us2d with thoroughness to remove
rust and old flaky paint. Wire
screens need to be painted on both
si'as pefore frames are coated.
This enamel is available in
green, copper and black and avail
able at paint, hardware and de
pariment stores.
. Microwave radio relay systems
us 2 signals that travel in straight,
narrow paths resembling flash
light beams and do not follow the
curvature of the earth. Because
of this, station antennae must be
within line-of-sight of each other.

Baer Served As Performances Of
“The Drunkard”, Temperance Play
By JACK QUIGG
HOLLYWOOD, (AP) — “The
Drunkard,” a revered Hollywood
institution whose patrons have
guzzled 4 million beers and muvch
ed 70,000 birthday cakes during its
record run, begins its 20th year
today.
It will be performance No. 7085
of the local run of the 19th cen
tury temperance melodrama,
which has been presented night
ly, come flood or earthquake, since
July 6, 1933.
When the play opened, during
the depression, its backers hoped
it might run four weeks, with luck.
Last week the two millionth cus
tomer came to hiss its wvillain.
“The Drunkard” has long since
passed the former long-run cham
pion, “Life With Father,” 3,218
performances.
Mrs. Mildred Ilse, one of the
original backers and now sole
owner of the enterprise, reports
that as usual, business is blooming.
The 350-seat house is sold out
three weeks ahead and she can
forsee no end to the marathon
run.
Return Again and Again
Film colony celebrities return
again and again to the show. Mrs.
Ilse says she can’t think of a star
that hasn’t seen it. The late W. C.
I'ields attended more than 30
t{imes. James Gleason, Boris Kar=-

“OH, Mr. Stassen , ..
Harold Lloyd, Janet Gaynor, Dick
Powell and Billie Burke have come
10 times or more. Ed Wynn, a
staunch fan, will be guest of honor
at the anniversary.
Why is the play such a hit?
“There is no simple answer,”
Mrs. Ilse says. “We try to create
an atmospZere of sociability like
in the old English music halls.
People don’t come just to see a
play. They come to have a good
time, just as they would go to a
nightelub.”
Paradox
One intangible that delights
“Drunkard” fans is the paradox
of drinking beer at a temperance
play. But there were no refresh
‘ments when the play opened. The
audience sat in a straight-backed
chairs—and squirmed.
“We put in tables,” says Mrs.
Isle, “but a table’s no good unless
there’s something on it. We decided
to try been, the the symbol of con
viviality.”
Since then the average customer
has consumed three bottles of
brew during the festivities. There’s
root beer, for youngsters and teeto
talers, pretzels, and coffee and
sandwiches between acts. All re
freshments are included in the ad
mission price—s2.so to $3.50.
