WASHINGTON ‘July 9 (AP) —
The cor: of living probably is at an
all-time high today. And it could
This wee indicated by a series
of sovernment reports this week
wiich sa Gl
1. Feod prices went up three
tenthe of 1 per cent in June—to
2 point 14 per cent higher than
just before the Korean War —
mainly because of grocery and
meat price increases.
2. The next overall cost-of-living
index cue in about three weeks
is expected to show another climb
because rents are rising, The last
index on May 15 was only one
tenth o/ @ point below the record.
3. Whoiesale prices were un
changed for the week ended July 1,
inteceting the decline during the
past few weeks is leveling off.
Predict Increase
A stats report to the Senate-
House: Economic Commitee said
priccs may climb to an all-time
poak in the next to 12 months—
uy 1 1o 8 per cent—due to jn
croases in. rents and services, a
recovery in clothing prices, and a
slight upturn in consumer dur
able geods, The report said food
niices would not'¢hange much un
less crop prospects were altered.
However, the Bureau of Labor
Statistics, after making a special
food survey of eight key cities on
June 15, said yesterday food prices
are climbing already.
It said increases in egg, fruit,
vegetable, meat and fish prices
were mainly responsible for the
food rise between May 26 and
June 15. Egg prices jumped most
-4.7 per cent.
The food price index on June 15
was 23.6 using the 1935-39 aver
age as 100,
The cost-of-living index on May
15 stood &t 189, one-tenth of a
point below the 189.1 reached in
December and January.
The BLS wholesale index for all
commodities stood at 110.7, using
the 1947-49 average as 100. Gen
early higher wholesale prices were
reported for livestock, textiles
and fibers. Grains and natural
ruboer were down.

Asks Action On

Self Sflffi
' LONDON July 9 —(AP)—A La
bor peer Tuesday called on the
government to take legal action
against Dr. Hewlett Johnson. Al
most at the same mement the self~
styled “Red Dean” of Canterbury
was telling news conference here
he was convinced the Allies are us
ing germ warfare.
Lord Ammon, a former Labor
party leader filed a question in
the House of Lords sharply at
tacking the dean for statements
“reflecting on the conduct of
British troops liable to create ill
feeling with other nations . . .
and to bring the church into dis
repute.”
v Pro Communist
Dr. Johnson, one of the direc
tors of the British Communist Dai
ly Workers, returned this week
from an eight weeks visit to Red
China. During his tour he was
quoted by the Communist Chinese
news agency as saying he had
found “most damning” evidence of
Allied germ warfare in China.
Eighteen months ago a similar
call for government action agaainst
him was refused by Labor Prime
Minister Clement Attlee.
Backs Reds Claims
Less than 12 hours afier re
turning to London from his Chi
nese trip, the “Red Dean” called a
news conference today to put for
ward what he described as “ir
refutable facts” about germ war
fare. ‘
He read a long statement saying
He had visited several places in
North China where he claimed
germ bombs had dropped on
Chinese territory.
He admitted that he had not
seen ‘anyone who had contracted
any disease through germ warfare.
REDS SCREEN TEACHERS
HONG KONG.—(AP)—Reports
from Red China say the Comxmun
ists are stepping up their cam
paign to get complete control over
teachers in South China.
Communist bosses in Canton
will give tests to 1,000 teachers to
check “on their political ideas.”
Such a campaign already is well
under way in North China.
SETTING THE TABLE
The new bride shouldn’t wait
until her guests are on the door
step before she worries about how
to set the table, Rehearse a formal
dinner setting before your first
party, and you will not be in a
dither on the night of the event.
Most times we set a table me
chanically, then when we attempt
to think about it for a big dinner
party, our minds are blank. One
good rule to remember now is
that forks go left, except the cock- ‘
tail or oyster fork which goes
right. with the knives and soup
spoon. l
