RICHMOND, Calif., July 10 —
(AP)—A 60-year-old woman died
in a hospital Sunday of heart
trouble.
Shortly afterwards, Police In
spector Darrell Davis said, three
men showed up and each said he
was her husband. One of the
three, Davis said, later committed
suicide. .
The officer said the woman was
listed on the hospital’'s records as
Dolly Clingenpeel, and her hus
band as James Clingenpeel, 63.
After her death, Davis said,
Clingenpeel arrived to claim the
body, followed shortly by Thomas
Powers, 60, a Stockton railroad
engineer, and W. H. Grist of Oak-
Jand.
Davis said that although Grist
arrived to claim the body as the
woman's husband, he later said
he had filed divorce proceedings
in Martinez in 1923.
But Powers insisted the dead
woman was still legally his wife,
Davis said he went to Clingen
peel’s home Monday to investi
gate and found the man’s body
on the floor of his garage. Davis
termed Clingenpeel’s death sui
cide from carbon monoxide gas.
Looking deeper into the tangle
Pavis said he found:
1. Born Ethel Hoyt, the woman
married one Floyd Settle of New
York in 1908. There was no record
of a divorce.
2. In 1914, she married Powers.
There was no record of a divorce,
3. In 1916, she carried Grist. He
filed for a divorce in 1923.
4. In 1923, she began living
with Clingenpeel, There was no
record of a marriage.

WATCH LOST 30 YEARS
CENTRALIA, 111. — (AP) —
Farmer William Buescher tells
this ticking good yarn about his
watch.
Thirty years ago he was fixing
fence on his Steeleville farm and
lost his 17-jewel pocket watch.
Thig summer he was working in
the same fence corner and found
the watch. Its leather strap fell
apart a 8 he picked it up. But after
the timepiece was cleaned and
polished, he said it was in good
running condition.
THE BANNER-HERALD, ATHENS, GEORGIA
s MGM's New
Animal Find
By JAMES BACON
HOLLYWOOD —¢AP)— Comes
now MGM’'s answer to Francis,
the talking mule—Fearless Fagan,
the wandering lion.
Unless Hollywood tradition re
verses itself, that means you’ll be
seeing pictures with such titles as
these:
“Fearless Fagan in Africa,”
“Fearless Fagan Takes a Mate”
and, of course, “Son of Fearless
Fagan.”
There is no better, or more con
sistent, moneymaker in the busi
ness than a series picture with an
animal star. Lassie, Rin Tin Tin
and now Francis are top exam
ples. Universal-International, the
trade reports say, uses Francis to
pay off the studio overhead.
Press Preview
MGM press-previewed “fear
less Fagan” the other day and in
troduced Pfe, Gloyd Humeston,
the real life owner of Fagan. Al
though Carleton Carpenter and
Janet Leigh were co-starred, it
was Fagan’s picture.
But surest sign that the studio
is going to give Fagan the buildup
is the news that Sidney Franklin
Jr., has been upped to producer
status.
Young Franklyn, until Fagan
came along, had only been an as
sistant to producer Gottfried
Reinhardt.
But about a year ago Franklin
read the headlines about Humes
ton and his wandering lion. The
Army had drafted Humeston and
he insisted upon carting Fagan off
to Fort Ord with him in violation
of Army regulations.
The story grew as Fagan was
shipped back to Venice, Calif.
Over The Hill
That’'s where Franklin found
Humeston. He says the young
soldier admitted he was toying
with the idea of going over the
hill with Fagan unless he could
tind a good home for the beast.
Franklin piled Humeston and
Fagan into his car and took off.
With the help of writer Eldon W.
Griffiths, the Fearless Fagan story
was practically written on the
spot.
REDS ENCOURAGE TATTLING
VIENNA —(AP)— Communist
Hungary looks upon children who
run with tales to teacher as the
best type of pupil.
This came to light in a report
of a teachers’ conference held in
Budapest recently in the presence
of Hungary’s Communist boss,
Premier Matyas Rakosi. The pro
gress made in encouraging tale
bearing was a main theme of the
conference. The slogan: “One
child must control another” was
adopted.
The Communist teachers ap
plauded enthusiastically when
one of their number addressed
the conference and said: “Who
would have thought, who would
have dreamed, that the pupils
themselves today control the tru
ancy of their comrades. The best
and model students elect control
commissions who watch the lazy
students and the truants, who re=-
primand them and report them to
the teachers, if their behavior
does not improve.
“How much nicer this is than
in the past, when the pupils pro
tected themselves behind the
backs of the teachers.”

COW EATS ¥ \LTH RECORDS
CUTTACK, India — (AP) — A
hungry cow stalled the wheels of
government here for several
hours.
It ate up records of the Orissa
State Department of Health which
Deputy Minister Besantimanjari

Assembly.
Communist opposition in the
Assembly made a field day of the
incident, shouting ‘“Resign” and
“Perhaps only a cow eould stom=-

After a hurried conference the
