ETHIOPIANS DRINK '
GASOLINE
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP)
—FEthiopians drink gasoline to the
int that the Ministry of Public
;)ealth is really alarmed.
“(zasoline is poison and inflam
mable and should never be drunk
in place of medicine,” the Ministry
* declared. The warning branded
those who “persuade others to
drink gasoline and those who al
low themselves to be so persuad
ed” as criminals.
The desire for gasoline as a po
tion is due to the widespread Eth
jopian custom of eating raw meat.
This, in turn, has caused the peo
ple to be widely affected with
parastig stomach worms.
The Mealth Ministry recom
mends a substitute made from
perries for gasoline addicts.

a Negro boy started saving nick

Moore, who learned carpenter

LINDBERGH MUSEUM
DEDICATED
LITTLE FALLS, Minn. (AP)—
A small museum containing heir=-
looms of the Charles A. Lindbergh
family has been dedicated in the
old Lindbergh home here. The col
lection includes the famed flier’s
toy soldiers, fishing tackle, family
china and carved items. A damag
ed wooden propellor is hang on
one wall. The museum-home is in
Lindbergh State Park.
Ala. He tells it this way:
“My daddy gave me my first 15
cents when I was 8. I invested a
dime for a pocketbook to keep the
nickel in. But I was never broke
after that. I figure some of the
nickels I began saving then built
this hotel.”
When Moore was 27, a truck ran
over him on a construction job
and broke his back. Dinty re
covered and decided to try truck
farming. He made a small killing
at in by 1942, then sold out and
bought a case.
As a restaurant owner, Moore
discovered that his customers
often had “no decent place in
town to sleep.”” There were some
good boarding houses but no ho
tels for Negroes.
That helped convince Dinty to
2o into the hotel business.

WASHINGTON July 11 (AP) —
William S. Cox had his commis
sion in the Navy taken away from
him 139 years ago. President Tru
man signed a bill today that gives
him the authority to return Cox’s
commission to him.
The unusual action was contain
ed in legislation brought up by
Rep. Edward E. Cox (D-Ga) —
no relative of the other Cox—who
said he turned up reports that
William was made a scapegoat in a
naval battle of the War of 1812.
Navy officers testified before
congressional hearings that the
evidence indicated the scapegoat
story was right.
It seems, they said, that Cox
was temporarily promoted from a
midshipman to a third lieutenant
while he was serving aboard the
Chesapeake, which was under the
command of Capt. James (“Don’t
give up the ship”) Lawrence.
Then, during a battle with the
British frigate Shannon on June 1,
1813, all the Chesapeake’s officers
save Lawrence and Cox were
M
killed or wounded.
They were standing on the deck
together when Lawrence was hit,
He asked Cox to take him below
for medical aid and Cox did so.
Later Lawrence died of his
wounds.
Stripped Of Command
A court martial found that Cox
—who was in technical command
of the ship as the only able-bodied
| officer—abandoned his post of
