DOGS 7 7arler-
A QUESTION that we're fre-
A quently asked is, “What type
of dog is best for a watchdog?"”
o which we often reply, “What
type of man makes the best sol
dier?”" The logical answer to that
(. one who is reasonably aggres-
SiV intelligent, and possesses a
normal amount of that nebulous
quality known as “bravery.”
~ne evact qualifications are nec
o:-ary for a good watchdog. And,
jost like the potential soldier, you
-1t tell how good a watchdog is
¢o ng to be until he's trained.
<»me people when buying a dog
preler to make their selection from
among the 28 breeds listed by the
American Kennel Club under the
h-ading of Working Dogs, since
most of them have been bred over
long periods for such specific du
tics as herding, guarding, and po
-I.'e work. Among the members of
this group are such popular breeds
as the Boxer, Collie, Bull-Mastift,
(iorman Shepherd, and Doberman
Pinscher.
Still other dog owners point out
that the terriers and bulls, al
though they come under different
classifications, make excellent
2 ardiang, particularly if they're to
be kept inside the house.
Our own opinion is that just
about any breed or mixture of
breeds can be taught to be a good
watchdog if you're willing to take
the time and trouble in training.
Watchdogs may be roughly di
vided into three classes: The dogs
trained to attack strangers ap
proaching your -property; dogs
trained to bark at strangers ap
proaching your preperty; and dogs
trained to bark at persons entering
or attempting to enter the house.
rirst of all, teaching a dog to at
t=-% is a job for a professional
trainer. It's a long and difficult task
COMMENCEMENT HONORS
ABOLISHED
OTTUMWA, la. —(AP)— The
O'tumwa Board of Education
stirred up a tempest when it de
cided recently to do away with
scholastic honors at future high
school commencements. No more
valedictorians or salutatorians.
The poard reasoned that class
srades -are not compiled -early
enough to make a fair distribution
of honer awards. Ottumwans who
disagreed engaged in a flurry of
lotter-writing. The board has
stuck by its guns.

DRIVE-IN THEATERS
USE STEEL SCREENS
NEW YORK — (AP) — Movie
sereens at modern outdoor drive
in theaters are being made of
steel.
Screens used to be made of
wood, anchored to telegraph poles,
or of cinder block masonry. Often
the soil settled and cracked the
<creen or termites moved in.
The mew steel screens hav a
concave surface to keep actors in
perspective and they ar guaran
teed to resist any wind under 100
miles an hour.
About 15 tons of rock are pro
cessed for each ton of fiber in
Quebec’s asbestos indusiry.

The Watchdog
because the dogs do not attack
men naturally, which is one reason
why they make such excellent pets,
Therefore, to train a dog to sttack
without making him vicious is ex
tremely difficult. However, it is sel
dom that a person really needs a
dog trained in this way. In fact,
except under unusgal circum
stances, it is probably much better
to have a dog that only barks be
cause even the best trained dog
may occasionally mistake a friend
for an enemy with unfortunate
results,
If you're going to train your dog
to bark and not attack, then your
‘next consideration is whether you
want an inside or outside watch
dog. Naturally, in choosing an out
side watchdog, climate must be
considered. Short-haired dogs
should not be kept out for long
periods in northern winters, par
ticularly if their tour of duty is at
night.
The sex of the dog makes little
difference. Some males are bolder,
but on the other hand, females ara
less apt to leave home to go roam
ing or courting. The larger dog, of
course, has the advantage of a
more formidable appearance.
Most dogs, large or small, will
bark at strangers. Teaching them
to discriminate between strangers
and friends is the only problem.
Like almost all training, it comes
down to praising when the dog
does right and reproving when he
does wrong. When he barks, try to
g 0 to him at once. But don’t re
prove him too much if he is bark
ing at the newsboy. Make it clear.
that this boy is a friend of yours
and in time he will probably get
the idea. However, if he’s barking
at a stranger, praise him extrava
gantly so that he'll understand he's
doing right. :
