Stars Mickey Mooney
Mickey Rooney, that inimitable,
indefatigablé entertainer, arrives
today at the Palace Theatre as
star of a throughly delightful new
musical maneuver, “Sound Off,”
filmed in Supercinecolor. The
film’s crooney and swooney—and
looney!—ingredients add up to
plenty of pleasure, if the reaction
of yesterday’s audiences is to be
considered.
Mickey is cast as a night club
entertainer who receives ‘“greet
ings” from a committee of his
“friends and neighbors.” In the
army, he falls woefully in love
with an army nurse, a lieutenant.
But the lady of his affections is
being courted by a sedate Major,
and she won’t give him g tumble
—at first. Rooney’s song and
dance shenanigans to win the fair
lady are fun to watch and his
troubles with the army are com
pletely entertaining.”
Probably the most exciting rou
tine in the picture is one in
which Rooney does a night club
act surrounded by a bevy of gor
geous six-footer chorines. The
film’s most amusing musical num
ber is a Rooney-and-G.l.’s rou
tine set in a rustic barn yard. In
this, Mickey presents some fast
and fine army bugling. Rooney
himself penned the featured song
in this sequence, a clever ditty
entitled “Blow Your Own Horn.”
Highlighting “Sound Off” are
six swell tunes, including “Sound
Off,” the hit parade title song;
Bugle Blues,” “Lady Love,”
’Rooney's own “Blow Your Own
Horn,” “It’s the Beast In Me,” and
“Home Sweet Home in the Ar
my."
Rooney plays the comedy lead
with great gusto and registers
laughs all the way; his very ef
fervescence seemed to carry over
to the supporting cast. Anne
James -as the gorgeous nurse,
Sammy White as Rooney’s Broad
way agent and John Archer as
his romantic rival, sparkle in their
featured roles.

MUSICAL FilM
TELLS HILARIOUS
MISADVENTURES
The film version of a hit play
that has roundly tickled American
ribs during a record 50,000 stage
performances takes over the
screen of the Georgia Theatre
when Paramount’s “Aaron Slick
From Punkin Crick” opens today.
The hilarious story of a crafty
country lad who outwits some
city schemers and lands a home
spun beauty in the bargain has
been the greatest success the the
atre has ever known. The comedy
has had over eight time as many
presentations as “Life With Fath
er,” fifteen times as many per
formances as “Tebacco Road,”
more than twenty-one times the
record of “Abie’s Irish Rose,” and
twenty-two times that of “Okla
homa!”
To this fabulous stage record
breaker, film producers William
Perlberg and George Seaton have
added a lively musical score and
three big stars—top TV comic
Alan Young, sensational song
stress Dinah Shore, and Metro
politan Opera star Robert Mer
rill, who makes his screen debut
in the romantic comedy. The
merry consequences are recorded
in Technicolor. The score by Os
car-winning song writers Jay Liv
ingston and Ray Evans, who
turned out such smash hits as
“Mona Lisa” and “Buttons and
Bows,” provides Miss Shore and
Merrill with a sheaf of promising
Hit Parade tunes. The screenplay
by director Claude Binyon pro
vides the entire cast with the
makings of a rousing romp.
Alan Young, as the sharp-wit=
ted Aaron Slick, gets launched on
a hilarious assortment of misad
ventures when travelling-show
singer Merrill suspects that Di
nah’s acreage is loaded with oil.
Merrill’s attempts to buy the farm
bring the three to Chicago, where
the singing schemer learns that
the country innocents have a few
tricks tucked up their sleeves.
The comical complications bring
Young in and out of the clutches
of a comely conniver, and ulti
mately into Dinah’s ever-lovin’
arms.
This spree is larded with some
bouncy song-and-dance interludes
that range all the way from a col
orful village shindig to a Chicago
hat-spot floor show. Adele Jer=-
gens, Minerva Urecal and Martha
Stewart—the last a high-powered
