MUSIC to Southern ears! The hum of busy factories, crowded stores and
streets: The ring of saw and hammer. And more than 26 million telephone
ealis a day!
There's another eheerful sound — 58,000 Southern Bell men and women
busy providing you and your neighbors with the most and the best telephone
service in Dixie’s history. Service that’s vital to the Nation’s defense. Service
that keeps you in touch with others 24 hours a day . . . speeding your business
s+ . emglohing your home life. ‘
TBLEPHONE growth is a striking exampie or progress in today’s amazing
South. During the 10 years from 1940 to 1950, the South’s growth in tele
phones was more than twelve times its growth in population. In the first 6
tonths of 1952 alone, we added 149,250 new telephones.

Frank Lloyd, Perdita’s fiance,

“I thought he might have kept
some sort of record for his own

Willing.
“There are a few references to
‘K. 8. but we can’t even prove
that means Katherine Shaw. More
like a diary than anything else,
L%ok for yourself,” Foyle admit

It was a loose-leaf book filed
with small, precise writing. There
was only one page that interested
Basil.

too late to change.
April 3 was the day Duggan had.
died.
Basil closed the book. “Could
‘W. S mrea W. Shaw?” William
or Wilber or Wilfred?”
Foyle shook his head. “Brinsley
Shaw is the only survivor, He
has no other name.”
“A fellow detective of Dug-
gan’s?”
“Every one who ever employed
Duggan says he never farmed out
footwork to operators from other
agencies. We've canvassed the
agencies. They've mno record of
his having done so. Perhaps W. S.
was a lawyer.”
“Named William Shakespeare,”
suggested Samson.
Basil laughed. “Mr. W. S. of the
sonnets? Perhaps there’s a Scot
tish Writer to the Signet in this‘
casel Like K. 8., the letters W. S.
are evidently the initials of some
body or something.” 8
Basil moved over to the window
The cat followed and sprang to
the sill, fixing mindless, yellow
eyes on the yard below with the
academic interest of a well-fed
pet. {
“Quiet here.”
“Yeah. Just a few children
yelling after school. And some
sparrows squawking over bits of
‘garbage. At night there are prob
ably cats yowling, but not this
one.” He looked at the black fur.
“He’s an indoor puss-who never

rough, dingy binding of the public

Timely Hint: Remove Chiggers
Instead Of Scratching Bites
By EDWIN P. JORDAN, M. D.
Written Alzr NEA Servie
~ PRACTICALLY everyone who
lives in the country, and even
nearly all of those wimo are city
dwellers, have at one time or an
other suffered with chigger bites.
The pesky little chigger has in
deed been responsible for many
sleepless nights.,
The chigger is a six-legged red.
undeveloped from of mite. At this
stage of its development, the mite
aparently must become a para
site in order to live and tries to
attach itself to some domestic ani
mal, bird, or human being.
If a person walks through un
derbrush or deep grass, he is
likely to cantact these undevel
oped mites. It is the feet and legs
which are most likely to be at
tacked. Chiggers crawl on the skin
and when they meet an obstacle,
such as a garter or belt, they are
likely to stop and bite, fastening|
themselves to the surface of the
skin, l
They do not burrow into the
skin but attach themeslves to it
by claws. The mite fills with
tissue fluids and drops off after
a few hours, leaving a spot on
the skin which is likely to itch
severely. A red welt forms at the
point where the mite drops off.
There are three ways of treat
ing chigger bites. One is to catch

Thé second line of attack is to
relieve the severe itching, since
the itching usually continues for
days after removal of the mite.
According to one authority, the
itching can be relieved by touch

such as standard boric acid oint

1 per cent, added to it.
APPLY 3 TIMES DAILY
Thig ointment should be applied
only in small quanities after
the alochol-about three times a
day as needed to relieve the itch
ing. It is rubbed in gently and
what is left is wiped off with a
little cotton. In addition to re
lieveing the itch, this treatment
may prevent infection with germs
which often follows scratching.
Of course, no treatment is as
satisfactory as prevention. If a
person is likely to come in contract

on which chiggers are likely to
exist, high boots or long trousers
may be sufficient to prevent the
