GLIDDEN, la. — (AP) — Old
Dobbin may have retired from
most Midwest farms, but he’s still
in demand in the Northeastern
United States, Billy Merritt,
horse-buyer, says.
Merritt says he is shipping a
carload of horses every week from
Glidden to logging camps in Maine
and to the Northeastern truck
gardening area.
Merritt, who attends horse auc
tions in lowa, Nebraska and Mis
souri, says a good young draft
horse brings about SIOO. The
horses have to be big and strong
and teams must be matched. So
far, Merritt says, he has shipped
10 carloads of horses this year,

COMMUNISTS CUT
INTEREST RATES
HONG KONG ~—(AP)— Com
munist banks in China cut in
terest rates to private industry as
much as 50 per cent last month,
the Peiping radio says.
This appears to be another
Communist effort to speed up in
dustry, which was crippled by the
Reds’ recent so-called “anti-cor
ruption” campaign against private
industry in Red China.
Some of the in dustries which
were fined so heavily they had to
shut down have been granted both
loans and big government orders
to get them operating again. Peip~
ing said the new interest rates to
private industry ranged from 1.05
te 1.65 per cent.

Folks' Day Club
NEW YORK, N. Y. — Many of
the problemg now faced by re
tired people could be helped con
siderably if day centers were set
up especially for them,
What retired people need most,
apart from money, is a substitute
for their dost workdays, says Harry
A. Levine, director of New York
City’s Special Program for the
Aged, in the August Journal of
Living. They need something con
structive and purposeful to do.
Otherwise they feel alien and un
wanted. Such feelings of rejection
cause the troubles which make
older persons “difficult.”
Day centers, where older peo
ple can ‘come to make use of their
talents and cultivate new interests
and friends, bring proven benefits.
A survey made in one such center
showed that in 6 months there
was a TO% drop in visits to doctors
and clinics by members. Periods
of invalidism and illness were
greatly reduced because members

When the William J. Willlams

The family recently finished
their 40-foot schooner, The Enif,
in their backyard and now have
visions of entering the beautiful

jects in which they were interest
ed. The 9-to-5 program served to
take their minds off themselves
and their ills,
Although at the prgsent time
only a few big cities have such
centers, says Levine, there is no
reason why every community
shouldn’t have one. A start could
be made with a simple meeting
place such as an empty garage
or large room. At the beginning,
a few chairs and tables are all
the furniture needed. They are
enough for checkers, talk, book
discussions and letter-writing.
Later, projects like carpentry,
sewing classes, dramatics and
other hobbies can be developed.
Such centers could go a long
way towards the prevention of de
terioration and premature aging,
provided they substitute for the
lost workaday life. The benefits,
points out the Journal of Living
article, will be reaped not only
by the individual members, but by
their families, to communities and
the nation.
If you overknead baking power
biscuits they are likely to have
a tough_texture and be a lopisded
shape. Knead the dough only
about a dozen times when you use
a standard two-cup flour recipe.
